Who Will Be the New 007?

With Denis Villeneuve confirmed as the director of the next James Bond film, the race to choose the new 007 has finally gained momentum, along with a significant change in direction. Now under Amazon’s control, the studio wants to rejuvenate the franchise with a British actor (or someone with a convincing British accent) under the age of 30. This rules out seasoned favorites like Idris Elba, Henry Cavill, or Tom Hardy, and opens the door for a new generation of talent ready to take on the role for multiple films.

The reference names for Amazon are Jacob Elordi, Tom Holland, and Harris Dickinson — and with that, the usual speculation reaches a new stage. With that in mind, here’s an updated list of who could become the next James Bond, without including — or forgetting — the current rumored frontrunner, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, who’s 35 and still in the race.

What do you think of this list?

  • George MacKay (32), star of 1917, could deliver a more introspective and physical Bond, in the style of Daniel Craig.
  • Josh O’Connor (34) – after rising to fame in The Crown and starring in Challengers, he could bring emotional complexity to the role.
  • Callum Turner (34), Dua Lipa’s boyfriend and star of Masters of the Air, has the traditional Bond look.
  • Joe Alwyn (33), Taylor Swift’s ex, has a certain enigmatic quality that could make for a great Bond.
  • Paul Mescal (28) – after Aftersun and Gladiator II, he’s a major star. Though his image leans more sensitive, his physique and intensity could breathe life into a more melancholic and restrained Bond.
  • Theo James (39, but looks younger). After The White Lotus, he was immediately speculated as a contender. Handsome, elegant, charismatic — though possibly outside the target age range.
  • Will Poulter (31) – many forget he’s British, and his role in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 already placed him in a major franchise. Versatile, physically fit, with screen presence. He could be an atypical, intriguing, and more unpredictable Bond.
  • Leo Woodall (27) – another standout from The White Lotus and One Day. Rapid rise, classic looks, impeccable accent, and a screen presence that mixes charm and danger.
  • James Norton (39) – beloved in the UK and set to appear in House of the Dragon and House of Guinness, he faces the same issue as Theo James: just outside the preferred age range, but still a fan favorite. If the age limit is flexible, he’s a strong contender.
  • Damson Idris (33), star of F1 alongside Brad Pitt, is one of the hottest names right now.

Honorable Mentions

  • Fabien Frankel (30) – our hated Criston Cole from House of the Dragon hasn’t been mentioned yet, but he’s a possibility.
  • Taron Egerton (34) – once considered, though possibly has too much comic “star power” for a more serious Bond. Would be a spiritual heir to the Roger Moore school.
  • Oliver Jackson-Cohen (37) – great visual profile and brooding presence.
  • Hero Fiennes Tiffin (26) – young and in need of a defining role to prove his capabilities, but not out of the running.
  • As previously mentioned, since he played Bond in the video game, I wouldn’t rule out Patrick Gibson.
  • Lucien Laviscount (33) – his role in Emily in Paris also put him on the radar.
