What Episode 4’s Synopsis of The Gilded Age Reveals

That’s right, folks—there are only 8 episodes this season, which makes episode 4 the halfway mark. In other words, time for major twists. And the question is: Is love a game of chance?

Episode 4 – Marriage Is a Game of Chance
Bertha faces unwanted rumors in the press… and the sudden arrival of her sister Monica.

After giving a lecture in Newport, Peggy and her mother meet the reserved Mrs. Kirkland.

Meanwhile, a grieving Ada tries a new way to connect with Luke, and Borden uncovers more about Mrs. Bruce’s past.

It’s a party day, and Gladys apparently locks herself in her room, still uncertain about going through with the wedding. That’s what we know from the trailer, and the synopsis suggests another problem: gossip is still swirling in New York. To make matters worse, the past shows up—literally—at the door, with the unexpected and not exactly welcome arrival of Bertha’s sister, whom she’d rather keep at a distance. The timing couldn’t be worse!

The suspense is whether the wedding will happen or not—and honestly, I’m only worried about “Larian.” Marian, as maid of honor, looks stunning in white (again, as seen in the trailer), so much so that even Agnes hints it’s good practice for her own wedding. Larry still doesn’t realize he’s part of Bertha’s next big scheme, and during the family dinner with the Duke’s relatives, it seems there’s still room for more drama. Will it really happen?

From the synopsis, it seems that Peggy’s intelligence and charm impress Dr. Kirkland—but the same can’t be said for her mother. Sparks will fly once again, but I’m sure our girl will hold her ground!

Ada’s loneliness makes her vulnerable to con artists, introducing a striking element of the Gilded Age era: séances and spiritual gatherings. The one who will “help” Ada is the swindler Madame Dashkova (Andrea Martin), who claims she can communicate with the dead.

The character is likely inspired by Ann O’Delia Diss Debar, also known as Editha Salomon, a famous fraud who made history in New York with her “spirit paintings.”

And if Borden pretended to be French at the beginning of the story—what could Dr. Bruce’s secret be?
