The Witches Are Back: Practical Magic 2 Begins Filming

More than 25 years after the release of the beloved cult classic Practical Magic, the Owens sisters are officially back in action. Filming for the long-awaited sequel has officially begun this week, and Nicole Kidman marked the occasion with a heartfelt Instagram post:

“The witches are back. Owens sisters’ first day on set! #PracticalMagic,” the actress wrote, sharing a video alongside Sandra Bullock, who jokes in the clip: “Turns out, we have a lot of work to do.”

The new film is being directed by Susanne Bier, known for her work with Bullock on Bird Box and with Kidman on the miniseries The Perfect Couple. According to Kidman, working with Bier and Bullock forms “the perfect triangle,” thanks to their established creative chemistry.

In addition to the return of the leading duo as Sally and Gillian Owens, fan-favorite aunts Dianne Wiest and Stockard Channing will also reprise their roles. New faces joining the magical world include Joey King, Lee Pace, Maisie Williams, Xolo Maridueña, and Solly McLeod. Meanwhile, Evan Rachel Wood, who played Bullock’s daughter in the original, revealed she was not invited back: “I offered my services, even if it was for one scene or one line. I was told they are recasting,” she wrote on social media.

With a script co-written by Akiva Goldsman (who also co-wrote the original film) and Georgia Pritchett, Practical Magic 2 is set to hit theaters on September 18, 2026.
