Task – Forgiveness, Vengeance, and the Price of Choosing a Side

Task keeps digging deeper into the central question Brad Ingelsby posed in the very first episode: Can a good person do something wrong? The answer seems obvious — yes — but the series insists on showing us how every mistake carries a different weight when it’s committed by someone we love. This episode puts Tom and Robbie on a collision course, both facing the same moral crossroads: forgive or destroy.

Robbie Finds His “Why”

The episode opens already at high tension, right where we left off last week: Maeve finally hears the whole truth Robbie has been trying to keep hidden. He isn’t just seeking revenge on the Dark Hearts in general — he’s after Jayson, the man who killed Billy, and who even dared to show up at the funeral and shake Robbie’s hand. That insult has consumed him ever since.

Robbie justifies that the fentanyl money will secure his family’s future, but it’s clear there’s something darker at work here: pure vengeance. Maeve confronts him, reminding him that the Dark Hearts don’t need the FBI to put him away — if they find out it was him, he might not even make it to prison. She also brings up the weight of Sam, the boy still being held hostage. Robbie promises he’ll hand him over as soon as he sells the 12 kilos of fentanyl — but Maeve looks away. She doesn’t believe him. And we start to doubt too. After all, if — the big IF — Robbie manages to sell the drugs and get his revenge, Sam is the only person who could identify him. That’s not good.

And Maeve is getting closer to Sam every day, teaching him to swim and worrying about his future.

Eryn’s Revelation – Love, Betrayal, and Private War

One of the most important moments of the episode is the quarry meeting between Robbie, Cliff, and Eryn. Now we know that Eryn, the current “First Lady” of the Dark Hearts, has an even more personal reason to betray Jayson: she and Billy, Robbie’s late brother, were lovers — or, as she says, in love. Jayson killed Billy when he found out. Since then, Eryn has dreamed of destroying the man she married. She warns Robbie not to move the drugs while the Dark Hearts are on high alert, but he and Cliff ignore the warning.

The Investigation Gains Momentum

Meanwhile, Tom and Grasso press forward with the task force. They link Peaches’ gun to a 2017 shootout between the Dark Hearts and the Vipers. The billiards hall scene is one of the episode’s most tense moments: Tom and Grasso step into Hearts territory, into a smoky, hostile environment, and confront Jayson and Perry, insinuating there’s a leak inside the gang. That plants suspicion in their minds and sets the stage for an internal conflict that promises to explode.

Lizzie and Aleah put an estimated value on the fentanyl found in the Nance house (around $1.5 million on the street). They endure harassment at Peaches’ old workplace but don’t back down, posting $25,000 reward flyers and prying a crucial name from one of the workers: Cliff Broward. This lead pushes Tom to decide to hit Cliff’s house that same night, even without waiting for backup. A mistake, of course.

Dark Hearts and Dangerous Alliances

Jayson and Perry, realizing they’re running out of supplies, decide to bring the Puerto Ricans to the table. Freddy Frias, leader of the rival gang, agrees to the partnership after negotiating a bigger cut — 50%. It’s the start of an alliance that could shift the balance of power in Pittsburgh, but also unleash even more violence.

The Inevitable: The First Double-Cross

Meanwhile, Ray, Cliff’s former cellmate, decides to betray the deal and steal the fentanyl for himself. He and Shelley break into Cliff’s house, but Tom and the team arrive first. The moment is chaotic: the door is already open, tension is thick. Lizzie is visibly nervous; everything feels on the verge of going wrong. She freezes just as Tom calls for help and is shoved down the stairs by Ray — a cruel irony for the man who can’t stop reliving his wife’s fatal fall — and Ray bolts. Lizzie recovers in time to chase him with Grasso and bring him down.

And while all this is happening, Robbie and Cliff drive past the house minutes later, seeing it surrounded by police lights. A near-miss that heightens the suspense and reinforces the sense that the walls are closing in.

Hours later, during Ray’s interrogation, Tom and Grasso get the key information that Cliff (and a friend whose name Ray doesn’t know) are waiting for a contact to unload the drugs. The FBI forces Ray to send the text, setting up the trap. Lucky — or unlucky? — that Robbie doesn’t trust him. He and Cliff will go to the meet, but first they’ll scout the location to plan an escape route.

Light and Shadow: Aleah’s Monologue and Lizzie & Grasso’s Flirtation

Ray and Shelley are interrogated separately. This is where Task delivers one of the most powerful scenes of the episode: Aleah reveals her past as a victim of domestic violence in a devastating monologue, which finally gets Shelley to talk. Now the task force knows about the drugs and who stole them — they just don’t realize it’s only the loose end of a much bigger knot.

To cut the tension, we get a lighter moment: Lizzie finally asks Grasso out for a drink, and their chemistry becomes undeniable. I have no doubt Lizzie irritates more people than just me, but her storyline with Grasso is the lightest thread in a narrative made of pure drama.

Tom and the Dilemma of Forgiveness

But melancholy once again takes center stage as Tom, now concussed, keeps working. Earlier, we met Ethan when Emily visited him in prison and saw him wasting away with guilt over what he did. Later that night, when Tom comes home, Sara confronts him again about her adoptive brother’s future. For the first time, Tom admits he doesn’t want Ethan to be released and that he cannot forgive him for pushing Susan down the stairs. Emily, who is just walking in, overhears everything.

In a flashback, we see Tom and Susan preparing the house to welcome Emily and Ethan, saying they couldn’t imagine letting them go — so they decided not to. It’s the final blow in an episode that asks, again and again: Is forgiveness possible?

And, as if Brad Ingelsby didn’t want anyone getting too comfortable, there’s one last twist. Tom has planted the seed of suspicion among the Dark Hearts about a snitch in their midst — and there’s also a leak inside the task force itself. Who could it be? Lizzie? Grasso? Aleah? Distrust sets in, and the show takes on a new level of tension — Tom can trust no one.
