Billy the Kid, Season 3, Episode 6 (Recap): The Legend Rises Again Under Michael Hirst

I knew that if there was even a chance, Michael Hirst wouldn’t stick to the official version that Pat Garrett shot and killed his former friend Billy the Kid. And I was right. After weeks of suspense, Billy the Kid picks up exactly where it left off — with the supposed fatal shot — only to turn everything upside down.

From Garrett’s perspective, we see the sheriff return alone to Pete Maxwell’s ranch. He fires twice, believing he’s hit Billy in the heart. Relieved yet shaken, he asks Pete if the outlaw is dead. The rancher confirms, and Garrett flees — warned that the Mexicans will want revenge. But as soon as the sheriff leaves, Billy breathes again. He’s alive, and Pete rushes to save him.

The next day, Garrett returns with his men. The ranch is spotless, and Billy’s body is gone. Pete claims his workers took the corpse to bury it in a secret location to protect Billy’s memory. Frustrated, Garrett heads back to town empty-handed — and without proof that he ever killed the legendary gunslinger.

While the press spreads rumors of Billy’s survival, the real villain reemerges: Thomas Catron. He humiliates Garrett, denies him the $50,000 reward, and mocks his debts and weakness. Disgraced, Garrett gives up on the law. In a desperate move, he visits Emily and confirms what she feared most — that Catron ordered her husband’s murder and made it look like a suicide. Emily, armed and furious, throws him out. But when she later speaks to her father, she shows that she knows the truth — and recognizes his fear of Billy.

Meanwhile, Dulcineia, heavily pregnant and hopeful, learns that Billy is still alive. Gravely injured, he lies between life and death, while she waits and prays. When her daughter, Sofia, is born, Billy awakens, and two months later, mother and child are finally reunited with him. Their meeting is tender but brief — Billy already has his next mission in mind.

And for that, he needs Jesse. The problem? Jesse is imprisoned in Texas. Still weak, Billy decides to free him. The rescue is bloody: Juan dies in the shootout, but Billy and Jesse escape together. When Jesse asks why he was so crucial to the plan, Billy smiles — and promises to explain later. The episode ends there, leaving the audience in suspense.

We can already guess what’s coming. Hirst never sticks to official history, and it seems clear that Billy and Jesse will seek revenge against Pat Garrett — before vanishing from the record books forever. Dead or alive? The series makes one thing certain: the legend is far from over.
