Freedom! ’90: The Cultural Impact of a Musical Revolution

Time flies. It hardly seems possible that it’s been 35 years since George Michael shouted what every artist eventually needs to say: Freedom! It wasn’t an empty cry — and certainly not the same kind of freedom he once sang about back in his Wham! days.

No, this time the cry was truly his own — no longer a cheerful, youthful refrain, but an adult, melancholic, and liberating outpouring. The first “Freedom,” released in 1984 by Wham!, was pure British pop: bright, catchy, carefree. It was the soundtrack of youth — of innocence, of that unshakable optimism that defined the 1980s.
