Landman – S.2, Episode 5 (Recap): The Pirate Dinner

T.L. is staying at Tommy’s house, once again staring out at the horizon. Nate is uncomfortable with yet another Morris under the same roof — a house that used to be strictly professional territory — and suggests that T.L. would be better off in a clinic. More than that, Nate argues that Tommy himself should be in the capital, far from the oil fields. Angela tries to lighten the mood by asking her father-in-law what his favorite dish is for dinner. He chooses seafood. For her, that’s enough to turn the evening into a concept: the “pirate dinner” is born.

Cooper’s mail has been redirected to Tommy’s house, which immediately strikes him as odd. Meanwhile, Cooper is making plans with Ariana, already imagining himself rich. She’s pragmatic: for that to happen, they’ll need to get married. And marriage, in her family, means formally asking her father for permission. Cooper decides he’ll do it — but first, he wants to talk to his own father about the wells.

If Ariana warns him that talking to her father won’t be easy, dealing with Tommy proves just as complicated. Tommy doesn’t celebrate the decision at all. Marriage, he knows, only makes things harder. The conversation worsens when Tommy admits to the disastrous mistake he made in the deal with his investors. It’s humiliating.

In an attempt to “save” Cooper from his own bad decisions, Tommy decides to buy the wells and hire his son. He acknowledges that Cooper has good instincts — undeniably so. Frustrated and boxed in, Cooper agrees. The conversation is cut short when Nate informs Tommy about the car accident from the previous episode. Tommy may be the company’s president, but he’s still the landman.

He’s furious to learn that the sheriff called Nate instead of him — and then Rebecca, again bypassing Tommy entirely. The suicide of the driver involved in the accident remains unresolved, and as if that weren’t enough, another incident comes to light: Dale’s crew was exposed to an H₂S cloud, blinding one of the men. Once again, Tommy knew nothing because Nate handled everything without telling him. It’s worth remembering that Nate and Dale live in the same house as Tommy. It wouldn’t have been unreasonable to say something.

Angela and Ainsley are looking after the elderly residents at the retreat. It’s Angela’s birthday, and she discovers — to her horror — that they’ve all figured out how to access the sex channels.

T.L. calls Tommy to ask how Cooper’s day is going. The list of problems is long. T.L. admits he doesn’t know what to do with so much free time and, to make matters worse, he’s locked out of the house. The exchange between father and son is brief, honest, and unexpectedly calm — until the neighbor, Shelby, strikes up a conversation.

The lawyers’ meeting is hostile and bleak. The issues go beyond environmental violations: there are serious financial problems — which suddenly make Monty’s heart attack seem far less surprising — and poorly structured contracts. Tommy’s 24 hours are anything but enviable.

Things get worse when Tommy goes to see Gallino. He believes he’s managed to free Cooper from the trafficker’s grip, only to discover that Cami is doing business with him. In case anyone forgot, Tommy reminds us: Gallino tortured him last season and murdered a man. No one else knows this. Tommy tries to argue, insisting he won’t do business with a criminal. Gallino, calm and confident, makes it clear: Tommy will have to back down.

Meanwhile, Ainsley and Angela prepare the “pirate dinner” for T.L., who genuinely enjoys the over-the-top absurdity created by his daughter-in-law and granddaughter.

Shaken by his encounter with Gallino, Tommy goes straight to Cami, who is trying to get a handle on the problems and deals she inherited from Monty. Tommy tells her everything about Gallino, but she refuses to believe him — or to change course. Cami has always won. She expects to win again. This round, Tommy is the one who loses.

Cooper endures an uncomfortable conversation with his future father-in-law. He learns that the visit was merely a test set up by Ariana — no permission was actually required. Even so, under a tense and threatening atmosphere, he agrees to stay for dinner. Cooper may be reckless, but he’s not lacking in courage.

Before facing the pirate dinner, Tommy stops by the bar and sees Ariana working. He leaves a $100 tip. Back home, with a guest list that includes Rebecca, Nate, Dale, and Shelby, Tommy walks into a house decorated as if Jack Sparrow himself might appear at any moment. T.L. jokes that if Tommy’s life is so bad, it doesn’t look like it. Everyone ends up laughing and enjoying themselves — Tommy included.
