Landman – Season 2, Episode 6 (Recap): Dark Night of the Soul

TL keeps his quiet habit of waking up to watch the sunrise and offers to accompany his son to Fort Worth. Initially reluctant, Tommy eventually accepts. At home, the dynamic remains unchanged: Angela and Ainsley wander around nearly naked, teasing Dale and Nate, to Tommy’s constant despair, as he always seems out of place within his own family.

At the technology fair, Dale’s team is confronted with an unsettling reality: robots are already doing their jobs. The threat isn’t abstract; it’s right there, efficient, functional, and cheaper.

Ariana talks to her ex-mother-in-law, who is in love and about to marry Cooper. Another blessing he’ll have to ask for. Poor Cooper: barely back from an awkward visit to Ariana’s father and already stacking new layers of family tension.

The trip to Fort Worth is typical for Tommy — domestic phone calls bleeding into work problems —, but there’s a rare moment of lightness when he ends up laughing with his father.

Nate and Rebecca argue over drilling new offshore wells. She insists on meeting the supervising geologist, Newsome, whom we know is Charlie, the man who helped her overcome her fear of flying and with whom she spent one night. Rebecca, of course, has no idea. His role will be to oversee the operations, and the encounter is as awkward as it is inevitable.

Nate’s first meeting in town is with Cami and Gallino, who appear united and aligned. As always in Landman, the episode’s title is spoken and explained: Noche, or Noche Oscura del Alma, a reference to a poem by Saint John of the Cross about finding comfort in times of crisis. Gallino suggests that Cami read it — after all, according to him, that’s exactly what she’s living through. Tommy joins them, and the sparring between the three begins immediately.

TL reunites with Nash, a former colleague now doing community service after passing bad checks. The exchange quickly escalates into physical violence, and the two have to be separated before it goes any further.

The negotiation with Gallino goes badly because Cami wants to take control and agrees far too quickly. TL is thrown out, leaving Tommy to deal with the fallout. When he responds with his usual cynicism, attacking his mother, TL confronts him once again: losing a child can destroy a soul. It’s an explanation that demands empathy, something TL can offer, but Tommy cannot. He does not forgive his mother.

Rebecca and Charlie finally reach an understanding through a conversation loaded with double meanings, one that works both professionally and personally. Rebecca remains irritating, as always.

After handing over her ring for Cooper to give to Ariana, Angela and Ainsley head to Dallas for shopping. TL advises his son, once again, to marry Angela soon: life is too short for postponement. Another philosophical exchange unfolds between father and son, fully justifying the presence of Sam Elliott and his powerful voice.

Cooper returns home and has to take Miguel to his grandmother’s house. Ariana doesn’t warn him of the trap: he’ll also have to ask for her hand from her ex-husband’s mother. Awkwardly, Cooper speaks about how much he loves Ariana and quickly manages to convince her. As a bonus, she offers to teach him how to cook.

At the celebration with Gallino, Angela notices TL keeping his distance and pulls him onto the dance floor. Ainsley does the same with Cami, creating the perfect opportunity for another private conversation between the trafficker and the landman. Gallino insists that his two businesses don’t intersect, but Tommy never lets him forget that he’s witnessed him kill. Now Gallino grows curious about TL’s past — and Tommy shuts down. Not about that.

When Gallino asks why Cami doesn’t trust him, Tommy tells the story of his history with Monty: they started together, but while Monty moved on and became a billionaire, Tommy lost everything. Gallino understands — or pretends to — and advises Tommy to resolve things with Cami quickly. Her doubt is ammunition for his enemies. Sharks know how to poison ears.

And it’s impossible to forget: the shark in the room is Gallino himself.
