Landman – Season 2, Episode 7 (Recap): Forever Is an Instant

We still haven’t reached the end of the season, and Tommy Norris’s 24 hours remain utterly exhausting. We wake up, once again, to an argument with Angela — always Angela. Tommy took Viagra and is stuck in a permanent state of arousal (yes, that’s how we start), which startles the room-service attendant. Everything is a trigger for Angela to completely lose it.

Cooper and Ariana, on the other hand, wake up in an entirely different tone: soft, intimate. There’s only one thing missing now — someone still needs to ask for her hand. And Cooper seems to suffer as much as his father, apparently.

Since everyone starts the day in bed, Rebecca wakes up in Charlie’s trailer. Professionalism went straight out the window. Still, the romance turns breakfast in the middle of the desert — dust included — into something oddly romantic. Charlie, of course, gives her a geology lesson. Between early-relationship flirting, the conversation quickly shifts to business: his report is crucial to saving the company. Rebecca wants precise numbers and clear deadlines, but Charlie reminds her of the uncomfortable truth about prospecting: everything is a gamble.

In the macholand of the drillers, Saturday morning means beer, heat, dust, cars, and women in short shorts. It’s Dale’s crew, still grappling with the consequences of the accident from the beginning of the season. At the barbecue, the men drink and laugh while the wives stay inside the house, wearing minimal clothing. Talk of retirement, for Dale, is pure utopia. Even the risk is worth it. He’s addicted to adrenaline.

The Morris family’s drive home is marked by sepulchral silence. Angela is still furious about the morning argument, her default emotional state in nearly every scene: yelling, irritated, permanently on edge. When she steps back, TL fills the role: asking Tommy to slow down, to stop for food, to take things easy. His slowness turns into philosophy. The son should savor every second, because otherwise, problems are always just problems.

Cooper goes to pick up his mother and sister at the airport — another opportunity for Ainsley to verbally attack her brother. Even Angela has to step in and make her stop. The reunion, however, has a purpose: Angela hands Cooper the ring so he can propose to Ariana.

Rebecca vents to Nathan that Charlie’s calculations — and Nathan clearly notices the intimacy — are far from optimistic. The mess inherited from Monty is expensive: at least $400 million. The lawyers begin planning their next moves, because this will inevitably land in front of a judge. Nathan immediately confronts Rebecca about her relationship with Charlie: a conflict of interest. Worse still, everyone will have to be informed. She storms out — as she always does when she switches into professional mode.

In 36 minutes of the episode, as we can see, almost nothing happens. Cooper remains focused on the proposal. Three hours later, Tommy gets home and grows anxious when TL takes too long to wake up. No — it’s just the show trying to make us think he’s dead. He’s fine.

Rebecca meets Tommy to tell him about her relationship with Charlie. She’s crying; Tommy barely reacts. Rebecca feels relieved. What actually bothers Tommy is that Nathan forced her to sign a formal conflict-of-interest document. Rebecca isn’t the enemy. Working 12 hours a day, where exactly would she meet someone outside of work? From now on, Tommy decides, he’s going to set boundaries — and start enjoying life.

Angela is still “mad,” but Tommy asks her to talk. He declares his love, which immediately makes Angela melt. She lists everything she wants out of life, and the two kiss. Inside the house, Ainsley, Nathan, TL, and Dale conclude that the couple’s immaturity is the secret to their success. I’d call it neurosis, but let’s go with the group consensus.

Cooper prepares an over-the-top romantic setup to propose to Ariana. And once again, the theme returns: living every moment as if it were the last. A refrain that feels less inspiring than it does worrying — especially considering there are still episodes ahead.
