Love Story (Recap) Episode 2: Crises and Reunion of Carolyn and John

Carolyn steps into the elevator to the sound of more hits from the 1980s and 1990s. She is now a powerful figure within Calvin Klein. More than two dozen Colombian red roses pile up, accompanied by apology notes from John. Couriers come and go constantly. She refuses to hear anything he has to say.

John is already immersed in work on his new magazine, George, debuting with Cindy Crawford on the cover. The concept is a youth-oriented political publication. In yet another scene emphasizing the constant objectification of his image, he appears half-naked in the bathroom, complaining that no one takes him seriously, that everyone treats him merely as a handsome body. An objectification that, ironically, continues even after his death.

He learns that Daryl Hannah has been seen shopping for wedding dresses, but he barely has time to react. His sister Caroline calls urgently from the hospital.

At Calvin Klein, Carolyn is furious at feeling deceived by John, though she masks it with indifference. Magazines speculate intensely about a possible marriage between him and Daryl.

At the hospital, Jackie Kennedy was treated after falling from a horse. She downplays the accident and insists on leaving despite medical advice to remain under observation. She asks for a few private moments with her son and uses them to harshly criticize his decision to launch the magazine. John insists he is trying to build something of his own, to gain control over his life.

Back at Calvin Klein, Carolyn once again demonstrates her competence. The brand is dealing with controversy involving Marky Mark and Madonna, and Klein decides to remove him from the campaign, needing a replacement. Carolyn is irritated by the feeling that she still does not receive the credit she deserves.

John is trying to record a video for PBS when Daryl arrives. She attempts to help him, but he keeps his distance. The arrival of photographers makes the situation even more uncomfortable, and she leaves. John tells her he has an event that evening and will meet her afterward.

At the party, fate intervenes once again. Carolyn is there — as is her ex-boyfriend Michael Bergin, now working as a nearly naked waiter. The encounter with John has been discreetly arranged by the Kleins, giving the two a chance to speak again. Carolyn feigns coldness regarding his supposed lie about being single and leaves him alone under the curious gaze of everyone present. The tension is so palpable that the entire room seems to watch.

John runs after her. He claims his relationship with Daryl is over. Carolyn keeps her distance, saying they can be just friends.

When he gets home, John finds a party organized by Daryl and her friends. He reacts with obvious bad humor. Her insecurity, especially regarding Jackie’s rejection, sparks an argument. John appears emotionally exhausted, but she either cannot or will not see it.

Carolyn also tries to convince herself that she prefers to remain only friends with John, though it is clear she does not believe it. She knows the pressure of being with him would be overwhelming. She resumes her relationship with Michael Bergin. For the first time, she shares something truly intimate about her childhood, yet fails to connect emotionally with him. Still, she dresses him entirely in Calvin Klein, considering presenting him as a replacement for Marky Mark.

At Jackie’s home, a family dinner includes Daryl, but the former First Lady refuses to sit at the table with her son’s girlfriend. It is the breaking point. After five years together, Daryl ends the relationship. She says she sees no future, while John does not know what he wants from life and refuses to confront his mother’s influence.

Later, Caroline and Jackie discuss how much she suffocates her children. Jackie defends herself, saying everything she has done has been out of love.

The next day, Carolyn receives more flowers from John — and this time she accepts them.

Meanwhile, John suffers a domestic mishap when Daryl’s dog escapes and is hit by a car. Devastated, the actress asks him to come to Los Angeles. He leaves immediately, without hearing Jackie’s messages.

Mother and son have not spoken since dinner. Shortly after hanging up the phone, Jackie collapses.

John is on his way to California, unaware that his mother is dying.
