The Last Thing He Told Me – Season 2, Episode 2 (Recap): Nicholas’s death drives to a fatal mistake

Naming the episode “Safe” is ironic.

After so much sacrifice to protect the one person who truly provided stability for Bailey and Hannah — Nicholas — he is suddenly gone, changing everything. At least he had a few years with the granddaughter Owen had once kept away from him.

But this quickly becomes background to the real shock: Agent Grady shows up in person. And a warning — Charlie was never trustworthy. Pay attention.

He questions the number Hannah is calling from, and she ends up revealing almost everything: she and Bailey fled after armed men tried to kill them. His response is simple — he wants them back.

Grady overhears the conversation and also witnesses Hannah breaking the news of Nicholas’s death to Bailey. He explains that Owen sent him to confirm they are safe. Before speaking to him, Hannah comforts her devastated stepdaughter. Bailey refuses to accept the loss because Nicholas had seemed fine, and they had finally begun to reconnect.

Grady reveals Owen is working to bring down the Campanos — the only way to end this nightmare. Pressed for details, he adds another layer: the Campanos are involved in drug trafficking. Hannah immediately finds Nicholas’s heart attack suspicious. Too convenient — their protection agreement ends, and almost at the same time, they are being hunted. Grady agrees.

While Owen continues his covert operation, Hannah and Bailey squeeze every piece of information out of Grady — increasing the danger for everyone. Hannah quickly deduces where Owen must be.

And then she reverts to her most frustrating Season One version: demanding to speak to her husband immediately. Bailey is no better — one of the most exasperating teenagers on television. For now, the plan is to follow Owen’s instructions: stay hidden in the hotel until he arrives.

Owen in the field

In Austin, the “super-spy” Owen breaks into Frank Campano’s office and finds the documents he needs. The problem is that Hannah and Bailey cannot follow instructions.

They decide they should warn the Campanos that they know nothing and pose no threat. Bailey suggests contacting Quinn and begins to distrust Grady. She also wants to go out alone, call friends, acting as if no one is trying to kill them.

Meanwhile, security at the Campano building detects movement. Owen is still inside when armed guards enter. They find his coat, but he escapes in full 007 mode.

The hotel mistake

Back at the hotel, Hannah overhears Grady arguing on the phone about grabbing “the package” and leaving, with no police involvement. Her paranoia spikes.

Later, Grady vents to the bartender, clearly exhausted. Then he spots Hannah outside her room making a call in the hallway — because discretion is apparently not her strength.

He confronts her and reveals there is an undercover informant. Things escalate quickly: bikers arrive and beat him badly. The pieces fall into place — the friendly woman who chatted with Bailey earlier was one of them. Someone has located the girls.

Hannah decides to flee immediately with Bailey. Grady tries to follow but fails. Ironically, moments after they leave, their pursuers storm the hotel. Grady hides and watches everything unfold.

Owen calls at that exact moment. Grady tells him the women are gone. In other words, Owen’s carefully constructed plan has just collapsed.

Running without a plan

Hannah switches into full survival mode — almost a modern-day Sarah Connor: spare fake plates, a disguised car, sleeping inside the vehicle to avoid hotels. For the first time, she seems prepared.

Bailey, however, wakes ready for another furious speech about her father and declares she will no longer follow his rules. She insists on contacting Quinn until Hannah gives in.

A huge mistake.

All their precautions are useless — they were being followed the entire time.

Quinn’s uneasy position

In Los Angeles, Quinn calls her father after hearing about Nicholas’s death. On her way to a café, she discovers Hannah and Bailey waiting.

She makes it clear she wants nothing to do with her family’s business. After persistent pleading, the women ask only that she deliver a message to Frank: they don’t know where Owen is, have no connection to him, and want peace.

Quinn responds coldly: if the story doesn’t convince Frank, the consequences will be severe. The Campanos will not stop until everything is resolved.

For someone who claims to have no contact with her father, Quinn sounds unconvincing. As soon as she leaves, she calls her brother Teddy, annoyed that Bailey approached her — but passes along the message: leave the girl out of this.

An inevitable destination

With nowhere else to go, Hannah decides to return to her mother’s house — a place she hates but sees as the only possible refuge. At least she and Bailey finally seem united.

Set to Bruce Springsteen, we remember the necklace Owen gave Hannah. It contains a tracker.

He knows exactly where they are going.

And it appears Hannah knows it, too.
