Dune 3: who’s who in the cast and what to expect from the final trailer

The release of the first trailer for Dune: Part Three marks the real beginning of the final stage of one of the most ambitious trilogies in contemporary cinema. After months of silence, the campaign for the film is finally taking shape, with the reveal of character posters and new details about the story that Denis Villeneuve is preparing to close his adaptation of the universe created by Frank Herbert.

The third film begins directly from the consequences of the ending of Dune: Part Two, when Paul Atreides, played by Timothée Chalamet, conquers Arrakis, assumes the imperial throne and unleashes the Fremen holy war against the Great Houses. That epic victory is only the beginning of the story now being adapted, based on the novel Dune Messiah, which examines the political and moral cost of Paul’s rise to power.

If the first two films were narratives of conquest, the third will likely become a drama about power.

The return of the main cast helps outline the center of this new phase of the story. Chalamet returns as Paul Atreides, now emperor and messianic figure for the Fremen. Alongside him, Zendaya returns as Chani, whose relationship with Paul becomes more complicated after his political ascension. Chani has always been a critical voice within the Fremen movement, and the conflict between love and power is expected to play a larger role in this chapter.

Another character who should gain prominence is Princess Irulan, played by Florence Pugh. At the end of Dune: Part Two, Irulan marries Paul for political reasons, but in the books she becomes a central figure within the imperial court and a crucial observer of the unfolding events. Many chapters of Dune Messiah are framed through texts written by her.

Among the characters who become decisive to the plot is Alia Atreides, portrayed by Anya Taylor-Joy. In Herbert’s universe, Alia is an extraordinary figure from birth, the result of Lady Jessica’s transformation into a Reverend Mother while pregnant. In the new film she appears already grown, and her presence expands the almost supernatural dimension of the Atreides family.

Speaking of Jessica, Rebecca Ferguson returns as Lady Jessica, although the actress has already suggested that her role will be smaller. In Messiah, Jessica barely appears, which means Villeneuve had to find narrative ways to bring her back into the story.

Among Paul’s allies, Javier Bardem returns as Stilgar, the Fremen leader whose devotion to Muad’Dib becomes increasingly religious. Josh Brolin also returns as Gurney Halleck, the former military mentor of House Atreides.

One of the most intriguing developments in the new chapter is the return of Duncan Idaho, once again played by Jason Momoa. In the novels, Duncan is brought back to life as a “ghola,” a clone created by the Tleilaxu with fragmented memories. His return becomes one of the central pieces of the conspiracy against Paul.

That conspiracy takes shape with the arrival of the main antagonist. Robert Pattinson plays Scytale, an agent of the Bene Tleilax and a master of genetic manipulation capable of changing his own appearance. In the book, Scytale is part of a complex plot involving several political factions determined to overthrow the emperor.

Another addition to the cast is Isaach de Bankolé, who plays Farok, a veteran Fremen whose story helps illustrate how the holy war initiated by Paul transforms the society of Arrakis itself.

Filming for the third installment began in July 2025 in Budapest at the Origo Studios complex, before moving to the deserts of Abu Dhabi, where several Arrakis sequences were shot. Production officially wrapped in November 2025 after roughly four months of filming, and the project has since entered a long post-production phase involving visual effects and editing.

The film is scheduled to premiere in December 2026.

The trailer arriving now will likely signal a clear shift in tone. The third film is not about the conquest of Arrakis, but about what happens after the victory. Paul Atreides is no longer simply a revolutionary leader. He is emperor, prophet and religious symbol all at once.

And the universe he helped reshape is slowly beginning to conspire against him.
