The Gilded Age: Who is Simon, and why he may return in season 4

Filming for season 4 of The Gilded Age is already underway, with cast members sharing glimpses and fans closely following every on-location movement. Denee Benton posted a video wearing one of Peggy’s now-familiar costumes, while Louisa Jacobson — or rather Marian Brook — was seen partially dressed for what appears to be a ball. Enid Turner-Winterton has also been spotted.

A party? A wedding? We don’t know yet.

What we do know — beyond the list of new characters inspired by real historical figures — is the return of a name that most viewers barely noticed, but perhaps should have.

Simon, Larry’s friend, the one who led him to lie to Marian because of that bachelor night at the Haymarket.

The confirmation comes from Lucas Iverson, who also plays Dr. Ogilvie in The Pitt. He made a brief appearance in The Gilded Age in season 3, episode 5, and confirmed that he will be back for season 4.

Simon, who was engaged to a woman named Ann (whose last name was never revealed), has known Larry since their Harvard days and felt more than comfortable navigating places like the Haymarket. His return could suggest a few possibilities: Larry may have fully embraced single life, keeping close to a friend who is far from a model husband, or Simon could end up serving as someone defending him in Marian’s eyes.

According to Iverson, filming for the first four episodes is already underway, and his role will be relatively small. “But it’s fun to be back and have a great time on set,” he told TV Insider.

Still, his own explanation raises some doubts. Because The Gilded Age is not filmed chronologically, Iverson said he is moving back and forth between this project and The Pitt, returning to the set at different points over the coming weeks — and again later in the summer.

Which doesn’t exactly sound like such a small role.

Without revealing much, he simply advised viewers to “stay tuned.”

Should we be worried?
