The film V for Vendetta made reference to the failed attack on the British Parliament in 1605, but it was a landmark historical event for England. For this reason, November 5th is an important date in England, when they remember that the King survived an, well, explosive attack.
The movement known as the Gunpowder Plot, was originated by religious repression, where Catholics tried to reverse the dominance of Protestants. Led by Guy Fawkes, the group intended to kill King James I, kidnap the princess, and change the regime. Guy was a violent mercenary, feared by everyone, and an expert in explosives. He’s the one who inspired V for Vendetta.

The Amazon Prime Video series Gunpowder, starring Kit Harrington and Liv Tyler, retells this original story in an uneven way. It lacks rhythm and chemistry, but knowing that it is a true story makes the content interesting.
Kit, who is heir to one of the movement’s leaders, Robert Catesby, is the producer. The series portrays every articulation up to the moment when Guy Fawkes was discovered keeping vigil over more than 36 barrels of gunpowder hidden in the basement of the palace. An anonymous letter, warning the King, ended up disrupting the attack plans. Guy and the conspirators were arrested, tortured, and killed.
Since 1605, it has been a tradition in England to set off fireworks to remember how close they came to losing their King. And as the traditional verse says:
“Remember, remember the fifth of November, gunpowder, treason, and plot. I see no reason why gunpowder treason should ever be forgotten!”
