The legend and fascination of Princess Diana, especially in fashion, is certainly timeless. In general, popularity and influence mattered, especially when more than two decades had passed since her death. Of all that was left of her legacy, the humanitarian campaigns, the troubled emotional life, and the images, certainly the impeccable princess that is timeless taste.
Every now and then her pieces that are within reach go up for auction, in general, breaking records. This is the case with two velvet dresses signed by Victor Edelstein, who was Diana’s favorite designer just when she stopped being a shy princess and became a fashion icon. One of them reached records in January 2023.
Victor liked velvet and few details. One of the most famous dresses in her wardrobe is also hers, the one she wore to the White House and was recorded dancing with John Travolta.

But the two disputed are others. No less famous. The sketch of the model that became known as “Dangerous Liaisons” should be sold now in 2023. The name became popular like this because it was used for the first time in the release of the film, in 1988. Diana repeated it in other premieres over the years and in the last photo session, which he did with Mario Testino shortly before his death.
At the time she first appeared in it, Diana is said to have stunned photographers and the crowd alike by daring with a strapless evening gown in black velvet and silk, diamond buttons, and red nails. The minimum price for the sketch is set at $8,000.

It is the stylist’s second piece from the princess collection to be auctioned in 2023. At the beginning of the other dress, it broke records, precisely the eggplant velvet that the Princess of Wales chose for her official royal portrait, made by Lord Snowden, in 1991. in other words, his last as a member of the Royal Family. The following year she and Charles would announce their divorce.
That dress was also used for a painting made over the photo and which is waiting at London’s Royal Marsden Hospital, where Diana was president in life. He was also featured in the photo shoot with Testino and in the Vanity Fair weeks cover story, released shortly before her death in 1997.

This particular dress has changed owners more than once, fetching nearly $25 million at a Christie’s charity auction for AIDS and cancer organizations. This year Sotheby’s estimated a minimum value of $120,000 for it, fetching more than $600,000 in a bidding war between four buyers. It was five times more than the pre-auction estimate.
The gown is a ball gown, again in silk velvet in a deep aubergine hue, with a stiff tulip-shaped skirt, augmented by three diamond and pearl buttons at the back. As mentioned, it was first seen in 1991 when the Princess wore it for her official photo, sitting in a Victorian chair with a crown and two golden lions perched on either side. Her sadness was apparent in the record. The dress was so constructed that a miniature was made and displayed on Franklin Mint’s limited edition Princess Diana doll in 1998 and was considered one of her most iconic dresses. And expensive.
