It’s so good to be able to see that every day there are more women leading casts in action movies and series, a movement that has been gaining steam for about 20 years and that in a little while won’t even be on the agenda. Taking advantage of the fact that the Queen of action, Gal Gadot, stands out with Agent Stone, I wanted to remember 5 other iconic characters that paved the way for her. Yes, the list could be longer!

Princess Leia from Star Wars
In the 1970s, it was Princess Leia Organa (Carrie Fisher), who fought even better than the men who came to rescue her from her kidnapping, who enchanted a worldwide following of girls who wanted to be like her. Leia has always stood out in the franchise, became a General and left the title of “Princess” behind (as she is a pioneer!), and is one of the best references of an action and adventure character. Part of her childhood was the soul of Obi-Wan Kenobi, but there’s room for us to discover even more about her.
Lieutenant Ripley from Alien
Lieutenant First Class Ellen Louise Ripley (Sigourney Weaver) was the sole survivor of the Nostromo in 1979’s Alien. Many of the public at the time barely paid any attention to her until the end of the iconic film. She returned later, already definitively the hero of the franchise and we will never forget her with her dedication and strength.
Sarah Connor from The Terminator
Sarah Connor (Linda Hamilton) is a legendary character, even more so because she was ‘born’ without being prepared, a victim and ‘girlfriend on duty’, ‘saved’ by a hero from the future, and resurfaced super prepared, badass, strategic, strong and determined to save not just her son, John, but humanity. Who doesn’t want to be on her side?
Trinity from The Matrix
The mysterious and lethal Trinity (Carrie-Ann Moss) stars in one of the most famous images in cinema. A computer programmer and hacker who escaped the Matrix, a sophisticated computer program where most humans are imprisoned, is the love of Neo’s (Keanu Reeves) life. And ours too, no?
Yu Shu Lien from Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon
In times of medieval China, the dedication and focus of Yu Shu Lien (Michele Yeoh) from Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon moved and enchanted us. A talented businesswoman and warrior, Shu Lien had an independent career and life, something rare in her day. This arouses the envy of Jiao Long, the daughter of an aristocrat who feels trapped by the prospect of an arranged marriage. Jiao doesn’t know that, in fact, Shu Lien cannot live her great love for the warrior Li Mu Bai because the culture obliges her to maintain respect for her late fiancé. The two clash when Jiao Long steals the precious Green Destiny, Mu Bai’s highly valued sword, starting an adventure of revenge and twists. Female-led action scenes that changed cinema, and have helped us move incredibly forward ever since. We thank Shu Lien’s sacrifice!
