I’m a big fan of Only Murders in the Building and the disclaimer is necessary because my appreciation always makes me partial. The maturity of the plot, which brings people from the past or references from previous seasons, into context, creates Easter eggs for us die-hard fans. But let’s go to the critical recap because we move forward in time and at the same time the list of suspects does not reduce.
We meet our good egocentrics again – Oliver (Martin Short) and Charles (Steve Martin) – still fighting and unable to simply apologize to each other. Oliver is looking for a replacement for Charles, with the help of his producers, and after suffering from a series of wrong choices he comes across the chance to have Matthew Broderick in the cast. That’s right, the actor is considered a living ‘legend’ of Broadway, starring in several hits such as the phenomenal The Producers (which produced another cameo, Mel Brooks playing ball with Oliver). Much of the inside jokes between them are lost on us, but it is enough to understand that Matthew is considered detail-oriented, intense and dedicated, so much so that Oliver gets tired of him within 24 hours and rehires Charles.

As the two are more involved with their careers this season, it is up to Mabel (Selena Gomez) to continue the podcast and the investigation alone. She is determined that the arrested suspect is not the criminal and the clues point everywhere and to all her colleagues, without helping at all. She (finally!) reaches Dickie (Jeremy Shamos), my number 1 (sometimes 2) suspect because he’s selling Ben Glenroy’s (Paul Rudd) memorabilia and she goes to talk to him. Dickie is suffering the grief and resentment of a lifetime of living in the shadow of his famous brother, which is obviously seen by Mabel as the reason. It is convenient for him that the police already have someone arrested and that life moves on, but we see that the investigations are reopened once the Only Murders In the Building Podcast returns to the air, with Mabel “solo” and a new hashtag: #bloodymabel. The big new element is that the police had Ben’s time of death wrong. He always set the clock back 20 minutes to be the last one to arrive, so he didn’t die at six past midnight, but at twenty-six midnight, messing up everyone’s alibis.
And that was basically it, the trio is in crisis, but at least Charles and Oliver have already resolved their problems. Oliver is still suspicious of Loretta (Meryl Streep) and has to notify Mabel of her discovery. With Mabel now officially out of Arconia, they will have to locate her quickly because whoever the killer is now knows that she can be discovered.

Let’s now theorize a little. There is no escaping the formula of the girlfriend that no one suspects is the killer, which was used in the debut season. The assistant and the police officer stayed in the second season, but we had other crimes committed by a producer and his son. If we don’t consider that Gideon Goosebury exists and is looking for a soul for company, among the living it could have been anyone. I’m still against the option of Loretta killing Ben, even though she’s far from being the docile person she sells as an image. I always thought Dickie would be among the main suspects and he remains at the top. The one who has not yet shown his true side is Tobert (Jesse Williams) who has Mabel distracted from his presence and curiosity. And of course, that stress dance and the bizarre relationship between Donna DeMayo (Linda Emond) and Cliff (Wesley Taylor) doesn’t help them. As I “have” to close, I will still keep my bets between Dickie and Tobert, without them necessarily having acted together.
Do you already have a hunch?
