A few episodes away from the conclusion of the short season of True Detective Night Country – there are only six episodes – the wave of terror is more present and at the heart of it all is, somehow, detective Evangeline Navarro (Kali Reis).

She is the one who can’t calm down about the murder of activist Annie K., archived six years ago without identifying the culprits, she lives with the panic of her sister who has a serious mental health problem, and what’s more, we know that she never found out who murdered her mother. To make matters worse, Navarro has to work directly with his least favorite person in the world, Liz Danvers (Jodie Foster).
Actress Jodie Foster may be the best-known name in the cast, but every interview repeats to anyone who wants to listen and pay attention that this season the story is about Navarro. So we will still have many surprises with the role of Kali Reis, the professional boxer and actress, debuting on TV alongside big names like her co-star, Jodie. It’s more than fine in all the scenes.
When the cast and director were in Brazil for the launch of the series, they spoke to journalists at CCXP São Paulo. We already shared what director Issa López and actress Jodie Foster mentioned about True Detective. Now it’s Kali’s turn!

MISCELANA: From what we’ve seen so far, this new season seems to have a heavy suspense, even with horror elements. What was it like for you to be part of the production of your third audiovisual project?
KALI: It was an incredible experience and what better way to break into this amazing industry than to have these incredible women leading and learning from them? Plus, you know, I was stealing from Jodie’s brain [laughs]. Like, what do they mean when they say that? It was such a comfortable and amazing experience, especially for such a big project and something I’m throwing myself into in such a heavy, layered genre.
MISCELANA: And a complex story full of secrets!
KALI: It was difficult, but it was a story that I was very pleased and honored to tell, or even just work with. I mean, Issa [López, who is also the showrunner] created a story that, you know, every word jumped off the page. I’m very visual, so I could see what she was seeing, but I didn’t actually see it until I was in the room with her, working on the scenes and discussing the details. She took so much care: from the characters to the setting and especially the culture where everything is based. I’m so excited to share it with the world and continue to learn more.
MISCELANA: We know that True Detective has a tendency to feature different protagonists who most of the time don’t get along. How will Danvers and Evangeline Navarro act in this regard?
KALI: We maintained this dynamic. They really hate each other, but I think they hate each other because they understand each other so well. I would say they love each other! And there’s that other aspect where they have no idea who exactly the other person is, so they’re intrigued to find out, even if they hate each other. I love how they work so well together. Danvers knows how to push Navarro’s buttons, and they bring out certain elements of each other that they normally wouldn’t show to people. Do you know what I mean? Like, like this: Danvers is an idiot and Navarro is a badass with a big heart. But even in the case of Danvers being an idiot, you see her heart because, like, she’s going to be offended, but it’s so interesting, it’s just this balance of a dance.

MISCELANA: What really constitutes the True Detective universe and its success?
KALI: I think the reason is that there are always a lot of characters that are relatable and have universal feelings. You know those emotions, those feelings that become obsessed and attracted to a good story. And in this season, as in others, there are happy parts, sad parts, angry parts. And there is also our relationship with nature and the ramifications of human contact with nature. Again, universal.
MISCELANA: And recording in the cold?
KALI: I’m wearing such authentic costumes, which were made by the people of Alaska for the soldiers, right down to the boots and the hats. Everything is so detailed that I don’t want to be the crazy character who doesn’t care about the cold. [laughs] My character worries about the cold and we get days like 15 below zero. It was really cold! [laughter]
No one doubts it!
