Aegon Targaryen’s Conquest: the beginning of the epic Game of Thrones saga

For fans of Game of Thrones and House of the Dragon, the last few years have been one of celebration and anxiety. With the rich and detailed universe created by George R.R. Martin, there are multiple potential series to cover the story already detailed by the author. Now, one of the most requested by fans has been confirmed by HBO Max: Aegon’s Conquest is the project authorized by the platform to begin development.

Fans are in an uproar because not only is this part of the story where basically everything actually begins, but it is also one of the richest in the entire House of the Dragon saga. It is obviously the beginning of Targaryen rule in Westeros, when Aegon I and his sisters and wives, Visenya and Rhaenys, ruled the territory with their dragons, unifying six of the Seven Kingdoms of Westeros in just two years. Only Dorne resisted the brothers, who began to reign together.

The showrunner announced for this long-awaited prequel is Mattson Tomlin, with credentials of having worked on Matt Reeve‘s The Batman and having co-written the BRZRKR adaptation, among other works. Going to the beginning of the story was always one of the possibilities most defended by fans and considered by HBO when Game of Thrones ended, but other projects gained momentum before.

Bloodmoon, which was set before Aegon’s Conquest, recorded a $35 million pilot, but it was scrapped. In its place came House of the Dragon, focusing on the period of the Dance of the Dragons, the Targaryen civil war that is one of the best parts of the book Fire and Blood. The series was a huge success when it debuted in 2022, returning for its second season now in 2024.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, which gave the scoop confirming the work on the new series, the proposal would be “a “back to basics” approach”, but nothing is basic in the universe of George R.R. Martin, who created a complex fantasy scenario and different versions of the same stories, as House of the Dragon is making clear.

What Game of Thrones projects are discussed and approved?

Since 2019, news has been accumulating about what could be produced in the franchise, which is one of HBO’s most profitable. Some are already becoming a reality.

The option that really pleases demanding GOT fans is the adaptation of A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms: The Hedge Knight, whose recordings are scheduled to begin this year, although no names have been announced yet: be they screenwriters, directors, or actors. The series will be based on the tales of Dunk and Egg.

Among the others mentioned is Ten Thousand Ships, which would cover the saga’s iconic female character, Princess Nymeria Targaryen, idolized by Arya Stark, and is an active conqueror, who led a personal fleet – of ten thousand ships – and ended up becoming the Queen of Dorne. Visenya is so important that even in the first season of House of the Dragon, she is mentioned more than once by Rhaenyra Targaryen (Emma D’Arcy) and Alicent Hightower (Olivia Cooke).

There is also the story of Corlys Velaryon (Steve Toussaint), from House of the Dragon, which is called 9 Voyages and which should show – of course – her journey across the sea, to the mysterious lands of Yi Ti and Leng.

Another series mentioned would be Flea Bottom, which would focus on the lives of the residents of Baixada das Pulgas, a poor neighborhood in King’s Landing. Little has been heard about this in recent years, however.

Jon Snow would return to show life after Game of Thrones

Still-traumatized Game of Thrones fans received the news that actor Kit Harington would be working on a series that would once again put him in the shoes of the long-suffering Jon Snow, with a mixture of happiness and suspicion. After all, in the controversial conclusion of the series, Jon stopped being the hero and ended his days in exile after killing Daenerys Targaryen (Emilia Clarke) to save his family and friends.

Do we want to know what Bran Stark’s (Isaac Hempstead-Wright) kingdom is like? Or how is Sansa Stark (Sophie Turner) leading the North? We want to know if they found Drogon, last seen taking Danny’s body somewhere far away? We have already anticipated that neither Emilia nor Peter Dinklage is ready to return to the madness of the GOT universe, and as Daenerys was killed, it makes sense not to have the actress, but Tyrion said goodbye to us as Hand of the King, without him, the narrative would be infinitely lacking fun…

Snow, the name of the series for now, has Martin’s approval; it could become a reality in a few years. Many, like me, see the possibility as a way to iron out some of the rough edges that bothered us in the season finale.

Robert’s Rebellion: one of the most anticipated by fans

Of the various stories requested by fans, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms: The Knight Hedge and The Conquest of Aegon are second only to one that is close to our hearts of all: Robert’s Rebellion.

The immediate prequel to Game of Thrones has some of the most legendary stories in the saga, as well as iconic characters: the Mad King, the brave Prince Rhaegar Targaryen, the young Ned Stark, and Robert Baratheon, battles, betrayals, stories of love, war, and death. These are fascinating years and full of different versions that need to be clarified. Including the truth about Jon Snow, Rhaegar, and Lyanna Stark’s parents. It would be absolutely incredible.

With so much ‘known’ material, it’s no surprise that Bloodmoon didn’t catch on before it even aired. Distancing yourself from names that are known to the general public can be excessively confusing. For many years, one of the games of Game of Thrones was precisely the difficulty of remembering the names of so many Houses, and so many characters, and remembering the family connections between them all.

The advantages of Robert’s Rebellion, Aegon’s Conquest, and A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms: The Hedge Knightare precisely that we can cross paths with beloved characters. So my personal bet is that it won’t be long before fans can celebrate with the announcement of this series, too, perhaps before Snow or close to it. And then dream about the spin-off with Arya Stark?

The fight over who will be who, especially Aegon I

Can we give a shout-out to Henry Cavill? Since GOT debuted, the actor’s fans have seen him playing all the biggest roles, especially Aegon I Targaryen and Rhaegar Targaryen. With both series, it would be the perfect opportunity, especially Aegon’s Conquest, which will be shown first.

I admit that speculation about who Aegon will be will heat up social media soon. Before that, we will have to find out who Egg or Ser Duncan will be, agree? And more than ever, it’s time to celebrate!
