Will we solve Greg’s mystery in The White Lotus Season 3?

Filming for season 3 of The White Lotus is already underway in Thailand and, although Mike White has warned that the theme will revolve around spirituality, I wonder if we will somehow solve the mystery surrounding Greg Hunt (John Gries). ? Yes, Tanya McQuoid-Hunt’s (Jenniffer Coolidge) husband, who met her in Hawaii and arranged for her death in Sicily, left many questions in the series open… including the question of whether he had help to get to her in season 1. Shall we theorize?

What do we know about Greg Hunt?

In the premiere of The White Lotus, we meet the self-centered and out-of-orbit Tanya McQuoid, a millionaire who travels to the hotel chain’s resort with her mother’s ashes. Emotionally shaken, Tanya wants to make a beautiful farewell, but ends up interfering with her sincere and disconnected way in the lives of many guests and employees.

In the middle of the trip, she bumps into Greg Hunt, a salesman who is at the White Lotus with a group of friends, according to him, to fish. We – like Tanya – were literal in this fishing, only in the 2nd season does the real reason for her trip and “fishing” become apparent.

The two meet by bumping into each other in the hallway as they are roommates. The couple soon embarks on a torrid romance and Greg, unlike everyone else, doesn’t seem to judge the appearance or oddities of the millionaire businesswoman. Affectionate with her, and understanding, they understand each other and fall in love, apparently.

In an unexpected twist, after Tanya admits that she is “an emotional disaster”, Greg confesses that the trip to Maui has a delicate side for him: he has a terminal illness and as he has no means of treatment, he is saying goodbye to life. in high style. Shaken, Tanya decides to help him financially to get the treatment she needs. And so it seems to be a happy ending. Really?

A year later, we reunite with Greg and Tanya at the White Lotus in Sicily, and the honeymoon seems to be in the past. The two are more stressed and Greg is angry that she took her assistant, Portia (Haley Lu Richardson), on what would be an intimate trip for the two of them.

Greg’s dissatisfaction with his marriage is evident and he wants Tanya to dismiss Portia, becoming even angrier when he sees that his wife doesn’t listen to him. To try to appease her husband’s anger, Tanya orders Portia to remain in her room and out of sight, creating embarrassment for the young woman.

Suddenly Greg tells him that he has to go back to Denver to work, leaving Tanya even more insecure about their relationship and vulnerable to any other male attention. And indeed, she meets another man. In fact, others.

The plot against Tanya

Every season of The White Lotus begins with news of a crime and we go back in time trying to decipher the victim. In the 1st season, it was the hotel manager, Armond (Murray Bartlett), who was accidentally killed in a long and strange construction of the series and, in the 2nd, we, unfortunately, confirmed that it was Tanya, a victim of another accident that we will remember now.

Shaken by the marital crisis, Tanya finds herself alone with Portia when Greg suddenly returns to the United States. She is convinced that he has a lover because she spies on his conversations and hears him declaring himself over the phone to someone else. To make matters worse, the consultation with a local tarot reader makes the businesswoman more worried: the cards show death on Tanya’s path and she becomes scared.

When Tanya accidentally bumps into the mysterious Quentin (Tom Hollander), a sophisticated Englishman living in Sicily, she is more than ready for another scam. He, accompanied by a “nephew”, Jack (Leo Woodhal), and Italian friends, listen to Tanya’s whining, praises her for her beauty, and distracts her with a world of culture and style, winning her over immediately, even if only in a friendly way. because he is gay.

It quickly becomes clear that Quentin wants to take advantage of Tanya’s fortune, but the season gradually builds up the truly frightening tragedy that is unfolding in her destiny. And yes, the plot is bigger than we imagine.

Greg’s past and collection of “pretty things”

Tanya opens up to Quentin about her marriage and he tells her that he is in love with a “straight cowboy she met 30 years ago”, and that he “would do anything for him”. She is enchanted by the sophistication of her new friend and his group, and as Jack and Portia get along too, everything becomes fun for both of them.

Quentin’s affection becomes somber with the little tips he has been giving Tanya, from the stories about the “rich woman who refused to sell the mansion on the local island to the mafia and woke up dead, floating on the beach where the resort is today ”, to the fact that he “collects beautiful things” and that “a world without beauty is not a world he wants to live in”, being in serious financial trouble at the moment. He also compares her to the tragic Madama Butterfly and tricks her into taking drugs and spending the night with a younger man. Instead of being scared, Tanya finds everything fascinating until she sees the photo of Quentin with his American cowboy. None other than Greg.

That’s right, apparently, Greg entered Tanya’s life just to gain her fortune and is behind a plot to murder her. The radical decision is because he signed a prenuptial agreement that would leave him penniless in the event of a divorce, but a rich man in the event of her death. Quentin never admits that he and Greg were lovers (he calls his boyfriend “Steve,” but as far as we know, Greg could be a fake name for the scammer) and there was even a hitman hired to kill Tanya.

She, in fact, was determined to leave Greg when he returned to Denver and the days with Quentin and his friends convinced her to move on divorced. Tanya only realizes that she is in danger when she finds herself isolated, without communication with anyone, not even Portia (who was practically kidnapped by Jack). Desperate, she tries to escape and, in an unexpected scene, manages to kill her captors, but slips and hits her head, falling into the water and dying in Sicily. Ultimately, Greg manages to become rich without any accomplices. Or almost…

The loose ends that can still be tied up

After Season 2, Tanya is found dead in an apparent suicide, but Greg’s scam left two loose ends: Jack and Portia.

Not only was Jack supposedly tasked with taking Portia away from her boss, but he would have to kill her as well. The young woman ends up realizing that there is something very sinister about her boyfriend, but only when it becomes irreversible does she understand that she is at risk with him. Genuinely fond of her, Jack regrets it, confesses the plan (or part of it), and “frees” Portia, who is terrified by everything and doesn’t tell anyone anything. She returns to the United States almost in hiding and could be vital in overthrowing Greg, now Tanya’s legitimate heir. Jack also survives, so two people can unmask the hitherto perfect scam.

“I think, as far as what happens with Greg and the plot for Tanya’s death, I may think Portia is scared enough to just leave it alone, but the fact that all those guys died on the boat, it looks like there must be someone who will track Greg. But you might have to wait to find out what happens,” Mike White commented after the season.

It would be amazing to keep the story going as Greg clearly had inside information when he met Tanya in Hawaii. Did he have help from a White Lotus employee?

Who is confirmed for the 3rd season, now in production?

Another feature of The White Lotus will be to mix at least one well-known character among the new ones, leaving a line that will allow us to know how the lives of many went on after their vacation in one of the chain’s hotels.

We were with Tanya in Hawaii and Sicily, and now we will meet Belinda Lindsey (Natasha Rothwell), who, in season 1, became frustrated with Tanya after the millionaire changed her mind about investing in her business when she fell in love with Greg.

We meet Belinda as the spa manager at the White Lotus resort on Maui, where her compassionate and spiritual personality leads her to be explored. She is one of the first to pay attention to Tanya’s sadness when instead of giving her a massage, she guides her in a ceremonial chant to enhance her well-being.

Belinda dreams of becoming an entrepreneur and believes in Tanya when the millionaire says she will invest in her business. The proposal is to create a wellness center, but when Greg enters the circuit, Tanya abandons Belinda, canceling dinner and appointments so she can dedicate herself to romance. Ultimately, she decides to put her money towards her future husband’s treatment and we say goodbye to a disappointed but still supportive and caring Belinda.

The character was also presented as a spiritual person, which matches Mike White‘s proposal for this season.

“The first season highlighted money, and the second season focused on sex. The third season will be a satirical and funny look at death and Eastern religion and spirituality,” said the showrunner in 2022.

Considering Belinda knew both of the dead men in both seasons — she was friends with Armand and witnessed Greg come into Tanya’s life — she’s perfect to be back. Even more so if in fact, Mike White continues with the mystery behind the scammer.

Who is in the cast of season 3?

The names of the cast recording in Thailand are interesting: Leslie Bibb, Dom Hetrakul, Jason Isaacs, Michelle Monaghan, Parker Posey, Tayme Thapthimthong, Carrie Coon, Christian Friedel, Morgana O’Reilly, Lek Patravadi, Shalini Peiris, Walton Goggins, Iris Apatow, Sarah Catherine Hook, Sam Nivola, Patrick Schwarzenegger, Aimee Lou Wood, Lalisa Manobal and Charlotte Le Bon.

The plot is still vague, what has been said is that it “follows a new group of guests at another White Lotus property, including a multigenerational gang with a patriarch, a corporate executive, an actress, a couple of mothers, a club wife field, a misfit and a yogi.”

Although they said that Tanya (Jennifer Coolidge) will appear in flashbacks, at least in Thailand there is no way to include her, since she died. “I’m jealous of everyone taking part. I just want to emphasize that I’m not a good sport about this, but there’s nothing I can do,” the actress joked.

Due to delays in recording, we will only see The White Lotus in 2025. And I’m hoping for news of Greg, preferably, being punished!
