The Divas at Cannes

Who would be the current Hollywood divas? It’s difficult to name, as they would have to compare themselves to legends like Katherine Hepburn, Ava Gardner, or Elizabeth Taylor, to name just three and from different decades. The current ones – Emma Stone or Jenniffer Lawrence – are not quite “divas” in the sense that they have talent and beauty like the ones I mentioned, but a very calm demeanor.

Anyway, to understand this well, MAX announced the screening of two documentaries that will be interesting to understand the difference: Elizabeth Taylor: The Lost Tapes and Faye, which will remember the relevance of the two stars (Liz Taylor and Faye Dunaway) and their great actions. Both will have their world premiere at the 2024 Cannes Film Festival.

I, personally, am very curious about both, but although Elizabeth Taylor: The Lost Tapes already has a set date to be on the platform (August 3rd), Faye has vague information that it will premiere later this year.

The documentary that will focus on Elizabeth Taylor is like what we have already seen with Princess Diana, that is, with tapes of the actress talking about her life, we will have her as the narrator and that makes all the difference. There are almost 40 hours of interviews, and with the images of personal photos, home movies, and clips of his iconic roles it will be possible to understand the difficulties and qualities, and, above all, contextualize his legacy. Liz was considered the last great Diva of cinema, so it will be very important to check it out.

Faye, on the other hand, has another style: Faye Dunaway won the Oscar for Best Actress in 1977 and in that decade she was one of the most in-demand actresses, but her confrontational personality created legends of clashes and behind-the-scenes dramas that will be interesting to see what the truth would be. With the actress herself giving her statement and revisiting her most famous roles, it seems that she addresses the controversy over Mommy Dearest, a biopic about Joan Crawford that many consider offensive and untrue and that Faye sees as a critical career error.

Hearing from Faye about her mental health issues and bipolar disorder, her family history growing up in a small town in Florida, and how the intensity of the characters she played still impacts who she is today will be unmissable. I can’t wait to have a confirmed date!
