2023 Emmy Awards Nominations

Just announced in the United States, the 2023 Emmy Awards nominations have few surprises and a determined night of victories for HBO. With Succession and The White Lotus, the platform will collect the main categories of the night, with no surprises foreseen until the night of September 16th.

The presence of House of the Dragon in the Drama category was expected, but ignoring Paddy Considine, who effectively put on a show in the first season before saying goodbye to the series, is very regrettable. Unsurprisingly, Jany Temime’s work was recognized and is among the nominees.

Gradually I will evaluate each category until September, but the first impression was of absolute obviousness in almost all the nominees. With so many biographical movies and series, it’s fun to see Beef‘s Steven Yeun as the only actor in his group – Best Actor in a Limited Series or Movie – who isn’t in a real person-inspired role. All others are Taron Egerton for Black Bird, Kumail Nanjiani for Welcome to Chippendales, the Likely Winner, Evan Peters for Dahmer — Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story, Daniel Radcliffe for Weird: The Al Yankovic Story, and Michael Shannon for George & Tammy.

I was surprised (negatively) by two actresses nominated in Drama: Elisabeth Moss for The Handmaid’s Tale, which is almost default and clearly without chances, and Keri Russell for The Diplomat, where she had no nuance to justify being among the five. The only indifference is because that category, which includes Sharon Horgan for Bad Sisters, Melanie Lynskey for Yellowjackets, and Bella Ramsey for The Last of Us is already Sarah Snook for Succession. All the others go for walks.

Another annoyance for me is having The Crown nominated for Best Drama Series as well as having Elizabeth Debicki as Princess Diana overkill. She looked spookily like her, yes, but the season was weak, in the shadow of the recent and more involved drama of the feud between Princes William and Harry, I don’t think it deserved it. And it marks the first “Queen Elizabeth” to be excluded, which is fair for Imelda Staunton‘s restrained performance but equally rude after naming an equally indifferent Olivia Colman in recent years. The Crown has already given all it could, if it were nominated in 2025 for its conclusion it would be symbolic, but now it just seems to be on autopilot.

A lot of good content was left out, given HBO’s dominance, but it’s worth mentioning that Daisy Jones and the Six won the affection of Emmys too, with the actresses (and the series) receiving nominations (Camilla Morrone and Riley Keough), but ignoring Sam Claflin. Baby, baby, baby!

Perhaps in the Comedy part, there is room for some surprise, as it is more balanced. Ted Lasso says goodbye with more prominent titles, such as Elementary Abbott and The Bear, favorites at the latest awards.

I thought it was overkill to include Shriking as an acting or series, but I liked Christina Applegate‘s farewell with yet another nomination for Dead to Me. Her health no longer allows her to continue working, but her performance in the Netflix series is unforgettable, it’s a shame that the content was so lost and kind of spread everywhere. She won’t beat Quinta Brunson for Abbott Elementary, for example, and before turning the next Lois Lane, Rachel Brosnahan said goodbye to The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel in a role that won an Emmy a few years ago but did not deserve to be among the finalists in 2023. Natasha Lyonne is always among the best and thanks to Poker Face, but the only one threatening Quinta may be Jenna Ortega who caused a worldwide furor with Wednesday.

And so we keep throbbing! September is right around the corner.
