Snakes, Venom and Secrets: Recap of the 3rd episode of The White Lotus

I confess my anguish with the plot of the third season of The White Lotus: there is a repetition of situations (friends on a trip getting into conflict; a seemingly happy family but full of secrets and drama, employees surviving the pressures of work, etc.) and in this tangle I am having difficulty deciphering which direction Mike White is taking us. Effectively, “nothing” new has happened, but the atmosphere is getting tenser.

Before we update the betting pools on who dies and who kills, let’s go to the recap.

The three fakes, or long-time friends, are in a complex tangle where one criticizes the other behind their backs, and the trip is heading towards a confrontation. Jaclyn is obsessed with Laurie “taking advantage” of being single, something she even considers, but doesn’t want interference. And Kate, always superior to her friends, doesn’t like it when they confront her about being politically conservative. Since Kate and Laurie are surprised by the true status of Jaclyn’s marriage, and they are apparently available for a vacation affair, when they all come clean, it will be epic.

What everyone on the Internet is highlighting is how strange it is that Valentin, personally selected by Khun Sritala to take care of the three rich Americans, is a Russian practitioner of Eastern spirituality who used to work in shipping in Vladivostok. It sounds very suspicious when we know that women who travel through the White Lotus network are targeted by scammers like Greg… Gary. Everything seems to be connected.

With the Ratcliffs, everything is also suspicious. Victoria, perpetually drugged, dreams of a tsunami destroying her house and how she hears her husband talking on the phone, without apparently understanding anything. It is a sign that, subconsciously, she is well aware that her life is going to fall apart.

Tim is already being investigated by the FBI and cannot prevent the predicted downfall. Solution? He adopts an electronic fast, confiscates everyone’s cell phones and iPads, and starts attacking his wife’s medicine supply to stay equally disconnected from reality. He continues to not open up to his family, and this only makes him even more distressed. Saxon and Piper continue to be at odds with each other, only agreeing to disagree. Lochlan remains tense and doesn’t make it clear to us what’s going on with his posture (or sexual curiosity), but strangely, he keeps watching videos of the 2004 Tsunami. Dense!

Disconnected, the Ratliffs look for new distractions. Saxon wants to “help” his Lochlan get laid (a similar goal that Jaclyn set for Laurie), while Piper finally seems to be thinking about doing something about her thesis. The problem? Saxon and Greg/Gary’s current girlfriend exchange glances and plan a trip on the millionaire’s yacht. Something strange is going to happen to everyone on the boat, and if we know Greg/Gary’s history, it’s not good.

Rick and Chelsea’s story is the most interesting and mysterious of all. If Rick is a criminal, he does not value discretion. He remains obsessed with going to Bangkok and confronting Khun Sritala’s husband. He easily convinces her that he is a Hollywood producer and asks for her contact information so he can talk to her in the city. Too easy, in my opinion.

Chelsea is in love with Rick, but their relationship is unhealthy and abusive. He wants her to “find another man to take money from”, but she wants him. At the same time, for some reason, Rick obeys her and goes to therapy, participates in silent dinners with Greg/Gary and his girlfriend… It’s very confusing.

Rick’s obsession with snakes kind of gives meaning to the fact that Chelsea wanted to buy the bracelet for him (the one that was stolen), and they both buy marijuana, but there is something strange about the drug that drives him to a frenzy instead of relaxing. The thing is that the therapy rekindles the trauma of his father’s death, and in a fit of rage, he “frees” the snakes from their cages, and as predicted, a snake on the loose bites Chelsea. She is taken to the hospital and saved, but now in debt to his girlfriend, he finds himself forced to accept a trip on Greg/Gary’s yacht, where he will have to run into the Rattlifs he hates so much.

Gaitock, who was almost fired for failing to provide security at the hotel that was robbed, recovers and wants to work as Khun Sritala’s personal bodyguard. Dreaming doesn’t cost anything…

And Belinda, who is flirting with Pornchai, finally retells the stories that should have made the news. She mentions the “accidental” death of her friend and boss in Maui, as well as how she was disappointed with Tanya McQuoid, who went back on the promised investment in her business when she met Greg and left Hawaii in love with him. That’s when she finally connects with where she knows Greg/Gary from. Belinda returns to her room and notices something strange. A ghost? An intruder? We don’t know yet.

Rick continues to organize the trip to Bangkok and arranges to meet a friend, Frank, whom he asks for help. Chloe, openly flirting with Saxon, highlights what Chelsea always likes to say: She almost died again. And the threat that “if she dies,” she will be a ghost in Rick’s life is so obvious that I hope Chelsea escapes Thailand alive.

Who is most at risk today? Belinda. She is the witness that Greg/Gary has to deal with to cover his tracks in Tanya’s death. What now?
