The Untold Story of JFK Jr. and Carolyn Bessette (see the cast)

Ryan Murphy is an unquestionable genius. Continuing his mission to revisit scandals and significant stories from American pop culture, his new series will dramatize the turbulent and iconic romance between John F. Kennedy Jr. and Carolyn Bessette-Kennedy — one of the most closely watched couples of the 1990s. American Love Story is part of Murphy’s anthology universe (alongside American Crime Story and American Horror Story) and was originally announced in 2021. Only now, however, is it taking shape, with a confirmed cast, filming schedule, and a planned premiere in 2026 on FX, with international distribution via Disney+.

The series will follow John and Carolyn’s relationship from the beginning of their courtship in 1992 up to the tragic plane crash that claimed their lives in July 1999. The goal is to portray the couple beyond the glamour and tabloid headlines: a passionate relationship marked by external pressures, private struggles, tension with the Kennedy family, and relentless media intrusion. The project promises to balance romance and drama, with a strong focus on Carolyn’s perspective — a woman who, despite her quiet and elegant public image, faced immense challenges trying to maintain her identity within the Kennedy mythos.

John F. Kennedy Jr. will be played by newcomer Paul Kelly, a surprising choice given that he has no previous credits on IMDb. According to the production team, Kelly was selected from more than a thousand candidates for his physical resemblance to JFK Jr. and his ability to convey charisma, intelligence, and vulnerability — key qualities for the role.

Carolyn Bessette will be portrayed by Sarah Pidgeon, known for her roles in The Wilds and Tiny Beautiful Things. While the casting of Pidgeon has been praised, it takes some imagination to see a physical resemblance to Carolyn — but no one doubts her ability to embody the character’s minimalist style and emotional intensity.

The cast also features several notable names: Naomi Watts will play the iconic Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis, John Jr.’s mother, in one of the series’ most delicate roles. She stood out in another project with Murphy, Capote vs. The Swans, earning praise for her performance as Babe Paley. Interestingly, in the same series, it was Calista Flockhart who portrayed Jackie’s sister, Lee Radziwill.

Grace Gummer (daughter of Meryl Streep) will portray Caroline Kennedy, John’s sister. Actress Sydney Lemmon is set to play Lauren Bessette, Carolyn’s sister, who also perished in the 1999 crash. Another curious highlight is the casting of Alessandro Nivola as fashion designer Calvin Klein — an important figure in Carolyn’s professional life, as she once worked in the brand’s public relations department.

American Love Story aims to do more than recount a tragedy; it seeks to revisit the American mythology surrounding the Kennedys from a fresh perspective. Carolyn Bessette, often overshadowed by her husband’s famous name, is expected to emerge as a central figure. Executive producers Nina Jacobson and Brad Simpson have emphasized that the show will explore what it means to live in the shadow of a historical legacy, and how public pressure can shape — and destroy — even the most intense love stories.

The project is still in pre-production, with filming expected to begin in 2025. Blending romance, psychological drama, and media critique, American Love Story: JFK Jr. & Carolyn is poised to be one of the most ambitious and emotionally charged entries in Ryan Murphy’s anthology universe. Let’s also revisit this story in MiscelAna.
