Why Madonna’s “Into the Groove” Is Back in the Global Top 10

Age gives it away, but “Into the Groove” was the song that finally made me a true fan of Madonna. I liked her first two albums, but it was the song from the film Desperately Seeking Susan that turned me into one of the Queen’s loyal subjects.

That is why it feels so curious to see the song circulating again now. Forty-one years after its release, “Into the Groove” has reappeared among the most listened-to songs in the world. And it is not because Madonna is about to release a new album, although that is also on the horizon. The reason is far more contemporary.

A viral video.

In recent days, a content creator known as Gymskin began using the track in his dance videos on social media. The twist is that he always performs the same choreography, simply changing the song each time. When “Into the Groove” entered the rotation, something clicked: the video exploded.

The dance itself is simple, almost minimalistic. Gymskin barely moves across the frame. The main movement comes from the shoulders, which he shakes from side to side in rhythm with the music, accompanied by a few understated arm gestures and small steps. There is no technical virtuosity, no elaborate choreography. It is exactly the kind of movement anyone can replicate in seconds.

Perhaps that is precisely why it worked so well.

There is also a curious coincidence. In the original “Into the Groove” video, assembled from scenes of the film, Madonna is seen dancing on a nightclub floor. The steps are not the same, but the energy is strikingly similar: she moves mostly through her shoulders, letting her body follow the pulse of the beat. It is not a choreographed routine so much as a physical response to the rhythm.

And that may explain why the song still works so perfectly more than four decades later.

Once, this kind of music spread through dance floors.
Today, it spreads through feeds.

But the impulse is exactly the same: an irresistible beat and someone moving their shoulders at just the right moment.

Perhaps that is why the return of “Into the Groove” feels so natural. The song was always, quite literally, an invitation to step into the rhythm of the dance floor. Forty years later, the invitation still stands — only the place where people respond has changed.

In the end, what this viral video proved is something Madonna fans have always known.

Some songs age. Others simply come back into the groove.
