We recently talked about Suri and that curious Hollywood tradition in which the children of major stars eventually have to decide what to do with a surname that can open doors while also creating an almost impossible standard of comparison. Suri Cruise seems to have made a particularly interesting choice: she is entering the same world as her parents, but trying to build a path of her own.

At 20, Suri, who began publicly using the name Suri Noelle after graduating from high school in 2024, is studying musical theater at Carnegie Mellon University’s School of Drama and will appear in Midsummer!, a contemporary adaptation of William Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream.

The production will be performed in Pittsburgh on July 31 and August 1 before traveling to the UK for the 2026 Edinburgh Festival Fringe.

What is more interesting than simply discovering that Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes’ daughter wants to act is seeing how she is choosing to begin.

So far, there has been no major Hollywood launch, no television series built around her famous surname and no multimillion-dollar production capitalizing on the inevitable curiosity surrounding her family. Suri is taking the less glamorous route and, perhaps for that very reason, the more interesting one: university, theater, staged readings and student productions.

In March, she had already played Angel in Cosmic Microwave Background, a one-night staged reading presented at Pittsburgh’s New Hazlett Theater.

The news also clears up some uncertainty about her professional plans. For some time, there had been speculation that Suri might pursue fashion. We now know that her academic training is in musical theater.

And there is something beautifully ironic about that choice.

Suri dropped “Cruise” from her public name and began using “Noelle,” Katie Holmes’ middle name, just as she was taking her first steps into an independent adult life. At the same time, she chose a profession inevitably connected to both of her parents.

She just appears to be entering it in a very different way.

Tom Cruise became one of the biggest movie stars in the world without following a traditional academic path in acting, building his career almost entirely within the film industry. Katie Holmes, although she also became famous very young through television, has developed a significant relationship with theater over the years.

Suri seems to be choosing to learn the craft first.

Of course, it would be naive to pretend she is simply another theater student. Being the daughter of Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes means growing up with access, references and opportunities that the overwhelming majority of young actors will never have. The entire “nepo baby” debate exists precisely because privilege and talent can coexist.

But there is a difference between inheriting an open door and deciding how to walk through it.

So far, Suri seems curiously determined to do that without turning her father’s surname into her main credential.

And perhaps that is where her own version of A Star Is Born really begins: not when we discover that the daughter of two stars wants to act, but when we realize she seems determined to find out who she is before Hollywood decides that for her.
