Who’s Lady Diana Mitford Mosley, the most dangerous woman in Peaky Blinders

We haven’t met her yet, but we very likely will soon. The real Lady Diana Mitford Mosley was listed by the MI5 documents as was deemed more dangerous than her husband, Oswald Mosley, according to secret documents published by the Public Record Office in 2003. As far as went on Season 5, Oswald was pretty scary, so THAT says a lot. My best is that she is to be played by Amber Anderson, who was seen on the set with Cillian Murphy for a few shots. Her character was surrounded by mystery and she looks a lot like the real Lady Mosley in some of the pictures.

So, it that is confirmed, theories should be updated. But firstly, let’s find out about her story, which means there are potential spoilers ahead.

Diana Freeman Mitford was the daughter of the 2nd Baron Redesdale and married Bryan Guinness when she was just 19 years old. They had two sons together, but shortly after she met Oswald Mosley at a party, she became his lover, leaving her husband and shocking her family and society. At the time, he already was the leader of the British Union of Fascists, married and with a string of lovers. Coincidentally, the first Lady Mosley was suddenly ill and passed away, and yet Oswald took his time to officialize his union to Lady Diana.

Diana was involved with the Nazis since 1934, after attending the Nuremberg rally after the party rose to power in Germany. It was there that she became friends with Adolf Hitler and Joseph Goebbel‘s wife, Magda. In 1936, it was at the Goebbel’s house and with Hitler within the very few guests that Diana and Oswald got married. The marriage was kept secret until the birth of their first child in 1938 (they had two sons).

Lady Mosley became so involved with her husband’s activities that she was often photographed speaking at meetings on his behalf. Soon she was deemed more dangerous than Oswald Mosley, according to secret MI5 documents that described Lady Mosley and her political leanings., stating that “Diana Mosley, wife of Sir Oswald Mosley, is reported on the ‘best authority, that of her family and intimate circle, to be a public danger at the present time. Is said to be far cleverer and more dangerous than her husband and will stick at nothing to achieve her ambitions. She is wildly ambitious”. I suspect that MI5 had plenty of reason to come to that conclusion.

In 1940, Lady Diana Mosley and Sir Oswald Mosley were interned, following the direct intervention of her former father-in-law, according to the papers. They were held without charge -or trial – due to the provisions of Defense Regulation 18B, on the advice of MI5. They were initially held separately but, after personal intervention by Winston Churchill, the husband of Lady Mosley’s cousin, were permitted to be together at Holloway. Three years later they were both released arguing that Mosley was ill. They were placed under house arrest until the end of the war.

After the war, they were unapologetic about their beliefs. They moved to France and Oswald died in 1980, due to Parkinson’s and she passed in 2003, after a stroke.

With this rich material, we can only imagine how much can be used in Peaky Blinders. I can see that Tommy is involved somehow with the MI5 investigations since they had an undercover agent working closely with the Mosleys. Gina Gray might be a double agent, set to bring the Shelbys down as well as the Mosleys.
