Of all the songs, the one chosen for the Spencer trailer, with the first images of Kristen Stewart as Princess Diana was a classic by Lou Reed, A Perfect Day.

As might be expected, what we see is that Diana has anything but a perfect day. The perfect contrast that fits the song. That’s right, she opens with happy references to all the little things that made the day happy: drinking sangria in the park, watching a movie, feeding the animals at the zoo. As he sings
Oh, it’s such a perfect day
I’m glad I spent it with you
But he actually reveals next:
You made me forget myself
I thought I was
Someone else, someone good
It’s one of Reed’s biggest hits, produced by David Bowie. Reportedly, Perfect Day was inspired by the singer’s first wife, Bettye Kronstad, after a happy day in Central Park, New York. However, some claim that it is also about Lou Reed’s personal conflicts over his ego, his chemical dependency, and even doubts about his sexual orientation, something he vehemently denied. According to him, the song is really just a love song.

Recorded by several artists, and used in soundtracks such as Trainspotting (in the famous overdose scene), the most famous version – and considered by the author himself the best – is from 1995, by Duran Duran.
The choice of A Perfect Day is perfect for Spencer. Used with a religious chorus, we see Diana struggling to maintain her sanity in an increasingly oppressive environment, with delusions and a palpable depression.
We don’t hear from Kristen until the very end when she replies that “They don’t”.
This reinforces the end of the lyrics of A Perfect Day: You’re going to reap just what you sow (You reap what you sow)
Just a perfect day
Drink Sangria in the park
And then later
When it gets dark, we go home
Just a perfect day
Feed animals in the zoo
Then later
A movie, too, and then home
Oh, it’s such a perfect day
I’m glad I spent it with you
Oh, such a perfect day
You just keep me hanging on
You just keep me hanging on
Just a perfect day
Problems all left alone
Weekenders on our own
It’s such fun
Just a perfect day
You made me forget myself
I thought I was
Someone else, someone good
Oh, it’s such a perfect day
I’m glad I spent it with you
Oh, such a perfect day
You just keep me hanging on
You just keep me hanging on
You’re going to reap just what you sow
You’re going to reap just what you sow
You’re going to reap just what you sow
You’re going to reap just what you sow
