When Lioness returns for its third season on August 2 on Paramount+, Joe McNamara (Zoe Saldaña) will face what eventually happens to many Taylor Sheridan protagonists: an external war becoming something deeply personal.
The first images and teaser released on Thursday (June 11) point in that direction. After spending two seasons balancing covert operations and family life, Joe will see those two worlds collide once and for all. The official synopsis mentions hidden networks, foreign operatives, and personal betrayals, as enemies working in the shadows begin to creep into every corner of her life.

In the trailer, Neal (Dave Annable) admits to his wife that he is afraid of what they have become. Joe, however, offers an answer that seems to summarize the show’s philosophy.
“The world didn’t become this way. It’s always been this way.”
The line is followed by explosions, gunfire and a chilling warning from Edwin Mullins (Morgan Freeman):
“May God have mercy on us.”
Meanwhile, Kaitlyn Meade (Nicole Kidman) makes it clear that what lies ahead is only the beginning.
“This isn’t the end of a fight. This is the start of one.”
Although action remains one of the biggest attractions of Taylor Sheridan’s series, Zoe Saldaña believes the true strength of Lioness lies elsewhere. In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, the actress revealed that season three was the most demanding chapter of the show.
“It was very demanding, I’m not gonna lie. I didn’t even know if I was going to be able to pull it off,” she admitted.
Saldaña explained that she had several conversations with Sheridan about where the story was headed and was pleased with the direction ultimately chosen. For her, the series works because it goes beyond military operations and action sequences.
“What I love the most is that it strikes a rare balance between high-octane action and genuine emotional depth,” she said. “I wouldn’t be able to be part of a show that was only action. The real power comes from these incredibly complex relationships between women.”
And perhaps that is where Lioness has truly found its identity.
Over the course of the first two seasons, Joe recruited Cruz (Laysla De Oliveira) and Josie (Genesis Rodriguez) for increasingly dangerous missions. By the end of season two, the team found itself in a desperate situation, prepared to die rather than be captured. Now, the newly released photos show Cruz back alongside Joe, suggesting the character will once again play a more prominent role after taking a step back last season.
The images also hint at a larger role for Morgan Freeman’s Edwin Mullins, alongside the return of Michael Kelly as Byron Westfield and, of course, Nicole Kidman as Kaitlyn, one of the show’s most compelling characters.

Saldaña revealed that preparing to play Joe involved conversations with members of the military and intelligence communities, in an effort to better understand the sacrifices required by people whose work demands putting personal beliefs aside.
“I wanted to understand the amount of sacrifice, pressure, and devotion it takes to put your life in danger for the sake of so many others,” she explained.
That commitment to exploring the emotional consequences of the job has always distinguished Lioness from other espionage dramas. The action sequences are intense and believable, but the heart of the series remains its characters — women who constantly navigate loyalty and moral ambiguity while trying to hold on to some sense of humanity.
If the previous seasons explored the cost of duty, season three seems determined to collect the bill.
And judging by Zoe Saldaña’s comments, Joe McNamara may soon discover that some wars can no longer be kept outside the front door.
