Warning: This article contains full spoilers for “Everything Beautiful, Everything Terrible,” the third episode of Dark Matter Season 2.

The third episode of Dark Matter Season 2 finally brings together the many paths the series has opened and confirms what Jason and Daniela were trying to forget: there is no universe distant enough to protect them from the consequences of the Box. They can change their names, abandon technology, and begin a new life, but they cannot erase the knowledge that traveling between realities is possible. Worse still, they are not the only ones who know how to do it.

“Everything Beautiful, Everything Terrible” begins three years earlier, as the Velocity team prepares to send Blair into superposition as its first human traveler. The experiment is still being treated as a scientific breakthrough, but Jason 2 already shows some concern about what he has helped bring into the world. He seeks out his former professors and presents the problem as a hypothesis: if an innovation could open up infinite possibilities but also produce unpredictable consequences, should scientists proceed?

The answer is as fascinating as it is frightening. Every major human invention has produced both progress and destruction. The Box would launch a new era of exploration comparable to the Europeans’ arrival in the so-called New World, only now on an infinite scale. It could unleash everything beautiful and everything terrible within humanity. When Jason asks whether the experiment should continue despite the risks, he hears the only possible answer: if something can be done, someone will do it. Human ego will never allow the discovery to be contained.

The season practically states its thesis in this conversation. In Season 1, Jason fought to return to the life he had chosen. Now the series wants to know what happens when a creation no longer belongs to its creator and begins to alter every world it reaches.

The Dessens’ New Life

In what has been called World X, a reality that appears to have followed a different technological path from ours, several months have passed. Jason, Daniela, and Charlie now live as the Stewart family and are trying to build an ordinary existence. They have a new apartment, celebrate Christmas, and even buy an ornament similar to the first one Jason and Daniela chose when they began their life together.

Charlie is back in school, has made new friends, and is preparing to apply to college. For a teenager from the 21st century, there is something almost enchanting about witnessing the birth of personal computers, receiving mixtapes from friends, and living in a time when no one carries a phone in their pocket. Limited technology was supposed to mean safety, but it also helps explain why Jason cannot completely abandon what he left behind.

He works at Matt’s bar and is paid in cash, a convenient solution for someone who does not officially exist. However, he continues visiting the abandoned school where the Box is located. Jason claims that he intends to destroy it and even begins making explosives, asking for saltpeter as a Christmas present, but his obsession soon stops looking like a simple protective measure.

Daniela is still trying to cope with the trauma. While helping Charlie with his college application, she hears him mention how many extraordinary things he has experienced, and she immediately begins blaming herself for everything that happened. Her own son has to remind her to be kinder to herself. Daniela survived a man who stole her husband’s identity, spent months being deceived inside her own home, and was then forced to abandon her world. Starting over does not erase any of it.

The family also realizes that a safe word will not be enough to protect them. Jason comes home and cannot remember the word they agreed upon, exactly the kind of mistake that could turn the real Jason into a suspect. The solution comes in the form of matching tattoos based on a design created by Charlie. The symbol becomes a physical mark of belonging: in a universe full of copies, the three of them need tangible proof that they are the same family.

Daniela Reunites With Blair, but Is She the Same Blair?

While dealing with her documents at the local equivalent of the DMV, Daniela believes she recognizes Jason in a man sitting in front of her. He is only a stranger, but her reaction shows that she is still waiting for another version of her husband to appear at any moment. Soon afterward, however, she really does find someone she knows: Blair.

The two women have slightly different memories of how long they have been apart. Blair says she traveled for a few years, lived as a nomad, and returned six months earlier after realizing that she had been alone for too long. Their conversation appears casual until Blair notices the name “Daniela Stewart” on her friend’s Social Security card. She then asks whether Daniela misses California, and the question takes on a deeper meaning for both of them.

The series has not yet confirmed who this Blair is. There is a strong possibility that she is the Blair who entered the Box in Jason 2’s world and, after traveling through different realities, chose to settle there. If this is indeed her, Blair may have realized that Daniela does not belong to this universe either, although neither woman dares to say so openly.

It is one of the episode’s best scenes because it returns to an essential question in Dark Matter. Even when two people have not shared exactly the same history, something of their bond remains. Daniela and Blair are friends and strangers at the same time, connected by memories that may not belong to the same reality.

Leighton Vance’s Empire

While the Dessens try to hide from technology, Leighton Vance is using the Box to distribute it. He visits a reality devastated by a pandemic and delivers a vaccine and treatment developed in another universe to that world’s version of Velocity. The company will be able to manufacture the drugs and, at least in this case, save millions of lives.

Leighton also visits his grandfather, Ezekiel Vance, who has been hospitalized with the disease. The situation triggers a childhood memory of Ezekiel secretly working on a hypersonic propulsion system and telling his grandson that all of it would one day belong to him. The boy grew up understanding science as power, legacy, and property.

Leighton’s gesture appears humanitarian because he genuinely brings a cure to a doomed population, but the transaction also reveals the scale of the operation he has created. He does not simply travel between realities. Leighton transfers scientific discoveries from one world to another, accelerates companies, and interferes with the technological development of entire societies.

In World X, Velocity-Tech has just launched a microprocessor far ahead of its competitor, MacNamara-Tech, and is already preparing to create something called a “portable telephone.” Sheila MacNamara hires her brother Mitchell, a detective, to investigate how Leighton obtained such an extraordinary advantage.

Mitchell has already been watching the Dessens. He knows that the family apparently appeared in Chicago and San Francisco at the same time, has discovered that Jason visits an abandoned school several times a week, and saw Amanda and Ryan enter the Box and disappear. The impossible has left too much evidence to be dismissed any longer.

Amanda and Ryan Learn How to Search for People

In another reality, Amanda and Ryan discuss their responsibility for creating the Box. Amanda is proud of the scientific achievement but also ashamed of the lives it has destroyed. Ryan argues that scientists merely built a tool and cannot be held responsible for everyone who uses it irresponsibly and hurts other people.

His argument sounds dangerously similar to Jason 2’s. That is precisely how Jason once treated his own creation: as a neutral discovery, somehow separate from the choices made by those who controlled it.

Their conversation, however, leads Amanda to an important discovery. Until that moment, they had been trying to imagine Ryan’s original universe by assembling its specific characteristics. Amanda proposes a different strategy: instead of looking for a reality, they can focus on a person. Ryan thinks of Jason 2, and the Box responds.

They arrive in a world where Ryan’s apartment appears perfect. The Pavia Prize is in the right place, the books are arranged exactly as he remembers them, and even a dent in the floor matches his memory. Everything suggests that they have finally returned home, until another Ryan walks out of the shower.

The encounter between the two versions is uncomfortable, but it produces an even greater surprise. The Ryan from that world calls someone who knows Amanda and immediately understands the situation. The person who answers is none other than Jason 2, alive after being left behind at the end of Season 1.

Ryan cannot resist punching Jason 2 the moment he arrives. His anger is understandable: this is the Jason who abandoned him in another universe and destroyed his life. Before they can settle anything, however, they realize that they are being watched.

Jason 13 Must Choose a Side

Mitchell MacNamara has assembled a surveillance team outside Ryan’s apartment. Beside him is Jason 13, one of the countless versions of Jason 1 created during his journey home. MacNamara believes Jason 2 is the leader of some kind of cell formed by travelers from the Box.

Jason 13, however, did not expect to find Ryan and Amanda in the middle of the operation. He knows both of them and realizes that they could be killed when the agents storm the apartment. Faced with that possibility, he grabs a gun and fires toward the window to warn them.

Jason 2 escapes in a car with Amanda and both versions of Ryan while MacNamara’s agents pursue them through the streets. During the chase, the group manages to exchange some information and learns that DARPA is now hunting everyone connected to the Box. When capture appears inevitable, Jason 2 makes a risky maneuver, gains a few precious seconds, and leads all four of them to the structure. They enter just before the agents arrive and disappear into the corridor.

The combination is as unlikely as it is irresistible. Jason 2 is now traveling with the Ryan he betrayed, another Ryan, and Amanda, the woman who shared his life in the world he abandoned. They all have reasons to distrust him, but they also need his knowledge to survive.

Jason 13, meanwhile, remains with MacNamara and will have to explain why he helped the fugitives. The scene confirms that the different versions of Jason are not morally identical copies. They share memories and desires up to a certain point, but they continue to choose who they want to become.

Jason Repeats the Choice That Created Jason 2

Back in World X, Daniela visits Jason at the school and discovers that he is not simply destroying the Box. He is dismantling every piece, documenting how it works, and studying the technology. To Jason, it is as though someone reached into his mind and transformed the greatest dream of his life into reality.

Daniela reminds him of an uncomfortable truth: it was not someone else who fulfilled that dream. It was him, only a version who chose to devote 20 years to research and work with a team. Jason 1 and Jason 2 are not opposite men. They are the same man after making different choices.

The conflict stops being scientific and becomes personal again. Jason missed seeing Charlie off to prom and lied to Daniela about what he was doing at the school. He is once again facing the choice that divided his life in the past: his work or his family. If he continues studying the Box, he may repeat the exact path that created Jason 2.

This time, Jason chooses Daniela and Charlie. He tears out the components, destroys the interior of the structure, and leaves only an empty frame. After having dinner with friends, he tells Daniela that he needs to return one final time to remove the remains and make sure that advanced technology is not left behind in their low-tech world.

When he reaches the school, however, the Box is intact again.

Jason managed to destroy the structure that existed in that universe, but he cannot stop another Box from materializing when someone crosses the corridor and opens a door into that world. The machine has not magically rebuilt itself. Another version of it has arrived with a new traveler.

The episode ends by revealing who has crossed the threshold: Leighton Vance.

What Does the Ending Mean?

Leighton’s arrival confirms that the Dessens are no longer safe. He is probably the same Leighton who has been distributing technology among different worlds and may be responsible for Velocity-Tech’s sudden rise in this reality. If he can transport vaccines, treatments, and industrial discoveries, he may also have delivered the microprocessor that placed the company ahead of its competition.

We still do not know whether Leighton deliberately searched for Jason or arrived in World X for other reasons. Amanda’s new discovery, however, makes the first possibility especially dangerous. The Box does not require travelers to imagine only the characteristics of a reality. They can think of a person and be guided to a world in which that person exists. Therefore, hiding in a low-tech society was never going to be enough to protect the Dessens.

Jason destroyed one Box, but he cannot destroy them all. Nor can he stop other versions of himself, Leighton, Blair, or any traveler trained to use the Box from thinking about Daniela and finding their way to her.

The title “Everything Beautiful, Everything Terrible” perfectly captures the episode. Leighton brings a cure to a world devastated by a pandemic, but uses the same system to build an empire. Amanda and Ryan find Jason 2, but they also lead the agents to him. Daniela reunites with a friend without knowing whether that woman is really the Blair she once knew. Jason chooses his family again, but his decision comes too late to close a door that can now be opened from anywhere.

The problem with the Box was never simply that it allowed someone to visit infinite realities. The real danger is that, once opened, no reality can remain isolated. Now that Leighton has found the Dessens, the quiet life they built is officially over.
