Contains spoilers for Season 2, Episode 7, “The Pyramid.”
The promise of Dark Matter has always been tempting: somewhere, the life we never had exists. The problem is that reaching it does not erase what happened in our own. In the seventh episode of the second season, the search for another chance takes on a frightening scale. Some want to reunite with a brother, others intend to save worlds, and some use the box to make a problem disappear. Everyone finds a justification. The consequences remain beyond their control.
Amanda and Ryan Discover the Price of Their Journey
Amanda and Ryan’s imprisonment finally gets an explanation. An epidemic called the Black Iris Plague is devastating that reality, and the authorities trace its arrival to another Ryan, who emerged from the box with another Amanda. Both died. The presence of living versions leads investigators to suspect that the technology may have cured them.
It is a cruel reversal: the journey that offers an escape can also bring catastrophe to people who never asked to be involved. Ryan feels guilty about what another version of him did. The series returns to the uncomfortable question of where an individual’s responsibility ends when their possibilities multiply.
That world’s Leighton helps the pair escape, hoping they will find a cure in another reality. During the dash toward the box, Amanda is struck by a dart. Her fate remains unresolved.

The Pyramid and Leighton’s Ambition
Meanwhile, Blair discovers that Leighton has built a gigantic version of the box. His team has already cataloged 74 worlds. The pyramid would allow them to transport equipment and large groups, but it still faces power limitations: it can operate for about twenty minutes.
Leighton outlines its humanitarian possibilities. He could bring technological solutions to worlds in crisis or evacuate refugees. Blair recognizes another potential use: transporting weapons and troops. The ability to help does not eliminate the ability to destroy.
She explains that her own journeys became progressively more terrifying and says she caused the destruction of an entire world. For Blair, expanding the machine without understanding its consequences means expanding the disaster. Jason 2 is also involved in the project, claiming that he wants to make amends. It is difficult to separate this attempt at redemption from his old confidence that he knows what must be done.
Charlie Searches for His Brother, Daniela Searches for Her Son
Charlie enters the box alone to find Max, his twin brother who died in childhood. He finds shelter with Laurel, a woman who welcomes travelers and records their stories. Her advice is to seek a specific memory, an emotional connection that can help guide the journey. Charlie draws on his memories of his brother, but the episode does not yet confirm a reunion.
Daniela discovers that he has gone when she calls her son. She leaves Jason a note and enters the box to follow Charlie.
Before that, her conversation with Gabriel, that world’s version of her stepfather, sheds light on her distress. Her biological father alternated between affection and violence. Living with different Jasons has reawakened that insecurity: how can she trust someone whose identity seems to change before her eyes? The multiverse gives literal form to an old fear.

Jason Crosses a Line
Investigator MacNamara gets closer to the truth about the Dessens. Jason slips the substance needed to access the corridor into his drink and abandons him inside the box.
Here, the most disturbing interpretation is how closely the two Jasons are beginning to resemble each other. The man who suffered when his life was stolen now decides another person’s fate to protect his own. His justification may be different, but the violence of his choice does not disappear.
When he returns, Jason fails to read Daniela’s note. A knock interrupts his work: Jason 2 is at the door.
Their meeting comes just as the moral distance between them has become less reassuring. Jason still wants to save his family, but he is already using the same technology that tore it apart to eliminate anyone who threatens him. How much of that family can he preserve if, along the way, he loses what distinguished him from his other self?
