That is why Thursday’s announcement came as such a surprise. Julianne Nicholson will reprise her role as Lori Ross in the second season of Task, Brad Ingelsby’s new crime drama. More than the return of a beloved character, the decision officially confirms that the two series now share the same fictional universe.

Narratively, the choice also makes perfect sense. Lori was never just Detective Mare Sheehan’s best friend. She was the emotional heart of Mare of Easttown.

Throughout the series, Lori seemed to embody stability in that small Pennsylvania community. Married to John Ross, mother of three, and Mare’s closest friend since childhood, she was one of the few people capable of breaking through the emotional walls the detective had built around herself.

But the finale completely shattered that image.

We learn that John had been carrying on a secret relationship with Erin McMenamin and was, in fact, the father of her baby. Even more devastating, Erin’s death was caused by Lori’s son, Ryan, who confronted Erin while trying to protect his father. During the struggle, the gun accidentally fired, forever changing the lives of two families.

It is Mare who uncovers the truth. As a detective, she arrests Ryan. As Lori’s lifelong friend, she destroys the life of the person she loves most.

The final moments of the series feature one of its most heartbreaking scenes. Lori cuts Mare out of her life, unable to separate her best friend from the police officer who sent her son to prison. Only later, after time has softened the wound, do the two women reunite. Mare visits Lori at home, they embrace without saying a word, and their friendship survives—deeply changed, but not broken. It was this devastating performance that earned Julianne Nicholson the Emmy Award for Outstanding Supporting Actress.

Now, years later, Brad Ingelsby has chosen to revisit that very character.

HBO has not revealed how Lori fits into the second season of Task. So far, the only official information is that Mark Ruffalo returns as FBI agent Tom Brandis, leading a new task force investigating a different case.

Still, Lori’s return can hardly be accidental.

She is one of the few characters whose story was intentionally left unfinished. How does a mother rebuild her life after her son is convicted of murder?
