Callum Turner has not officially been named the next James Bond, but he has never appeared closer to landing the most coveted role in British cinema. At 36, the actor who gained international recognition through Fantastic Beasts and delivered a standout performance in Masters of the Air is once again at the center of speculation after journalist Roger Friedman, of Showbiz411, reported on Monday, November 2, that Turner is being talked about in Hollywood circles as Daniel Craig’s successor. Friedman has an important track record: he was among the first journalists to report Craig’s casting in Casino Royale back in 2005.
The story gained momentum because Turner was reportedly among the actors invited to the final screen tests at Bray Studios in England in late October. According to Variety, the selection process involves casting director Nina Gold, known for her work on Game of Thrones, and Denis Villeneuve, who will direct the next installment. Jack Lowden, from Slow Horses, and Josh O’Connor, from The Crown, have also been linked to the role.
But who exactly is Callum Turner, and why does Hollywood believe he could be the next 007?

Born in London on February 15, 1990, Callum Robilliard Turner grew up in the World’s End housing estate in Chelsea, raised by his mother, Rosemary. Before seriously considering acting, he dreamed of becoming a professional footballer. He played competitive youth football, and when he realized the sport would not become his career, he began working as a model. His acting career started with small film and television projects, without the benefit of formal training at a traditional drama school.
His first major opportunity came with John Boorman’s Queen and Country (2014), in which he played a young British soldier during the 1950s. The performance drew attention to his ability to combine classic leading-man looks with an unconventional sense of vulnerability.
Over the following years, he appeared in productions including Victor Frankenstein, Assassin’s Creed, and The Only Living Boy in New York (2017), in which he played the son of Pierce Brosnan’s character. Nearly a decade later, that professional connection would take on unexpected significance.
In 2018, Turner joined a major franchise when he was cast as Theseus Scamander, the brother of Eddie Redmayne’s Newt Scamander, in Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald. He reprised the role in The Secrets of Dumbledore in 2022, demonstrating that he could hold his own in a blockbuster without disappearing among established characters and elaborate visual effects.
It was television, however, that offered one of his strongest opportunities. In The Capture (2019), he played Shaun Emery, a former soldier caught in an investigation that questions the reliability of images and surveillance technology. The performance earned him a BAFTA nomination for Best Leading Actor, proving that his dramatic presence extended well beyond his appearance.
Then came The Boys in the Boat (2023), directed by George Clooney, and Masters of the Air (2024), the Apple TV production from Steven Spielberg and Tom Hanks. In the World War II drama about American bomber crews, Turner played Major John Egan, known as Bucky, opposite Austin Butler. His character combined courage, confidence, impulsiveness, and a charisma that helped conceal the psychological consequences of war.

It is precisely this combination that suggests his potential as James Bond. Turner has physical presence, natural elegance, and the ability to portray seemingly self-assured men who conceal inner conflicts. He also belongs to a generation of actors who grew up admiring Robert De Niro and Leonardo DiCaprio while showing an affinity for the tradition of stars such as Montgomery Clift and Gary Cooper.
More recently, he starred opposite Elizabeth Olsen and Miles Teller in the romantic comedy Eternity (2025), expanding his range into a genre he had rarely explored. In 2026, he appeared in Rosebush Pruning, directed by Brazilian filmmaker Karim Aïnouz and presented at the Berlin International Film Festival, alongside Elle Fanning, Jamie Bell, and Pamela Anderson.
When Did Callum Turner First Become a James Bond Contender?
Turner’s name had circulated among possible successors to Daniel Craig for some time, but speculation intensified throughout 2025, particularly among British bookmakers. In November of that year, Coral placed him ahead of better-known candidates such as Aaron Taylor-Johnson and Henry Cavill following a significant shift in betting activity.
The rumors gained fresh momentum in February 2026, when Turner attended the Berlin International Film Festival to promote Rosebush Pruning. Asked about James Bond, he avoided giving a direct answer, suggesting that it was too early to discuss the matter.
In June, he admitted to The Hollywood Reporter that even people he had not spoken to in ten years were contacting him to ask whether he would become the next 007. Curiosity had clearly spread beyond industry circles and into his everyday life.
The most significant development came in October. According to reports in the American press, Turner, Jack Lowden, Josh O’Connor, and an unidentified fourth candidate were invited to participate in the final round of auditions. The screen tests were reported by publications including Variety, The Hollywood Reporter, and TheWrap. His reported participation, however, does not constitute confirmation that he has secured the role.

On November 2, Roger Friedman added fuel to the speculation by identifying Turner as the likely choice. Another clue attracted attention: Turner had stepped down as a director of Twentytwo Films, the production company he founded with Dua Lipa. Fans interpreted the move as an attempt to clear his schedule for a franchise that could demand years of commitment. However, corporate records show that his departure took place in December 2025, long before the latest screen tests.
What Does Pierce Brosnan Think of Callum Turner?
The possibility of Turner’s casting received an especially interesting response on Tuesday, November 3. In an interview with Vanity Fair, Pierce Brosnan, who played James Bond in four films between 1995 and 2002, praised Turner, with whom he worked on The Only Living Boy in New York.
Brosnan highlighted the actor’s strengths and observed that the performers currently associated with the role possess cinematic presence, distinctive voices, physical qualities, and promising careers. He also expressed enthusiasm about Denis Villeneuve, saying he hopes the director will surprise audiences with his vision for the franchise.
His praise does not mean Brosnan knows who has been chosen, but it adds a significant endorsement to Turner’s candidacy. After all, he understands both the demands of playing James Bond and the abilities of the actor now considered a favorite.
That opinion, however, is not unanimous. Debbie McWilliams, the casting director involved in selecting Timothy Dalton, Pierce Brosnan, and Daniel Craig, said in June that she would prefer a less familiar actor to take over the character. In her view, James Bond should retain an aura of mystery, something that can be difficult when an actor’s personal life is already extensively covered by the media.
And that may be one of the more delicate aspects of Turner’s candidacy. His relationship with Dua Lipa has made him recognizable to a much wider audience than those who follow his films. On the other hand, the connection has also inspired an irresistible possibility among fans: the singer could perform the theme song for the next Bond movie, an idea Friedman himself raised when discussing Turner’s potential casting.

A Different James Bond From Daniel Craig?
Callum Turner’s greatest strength may lie precisely in the fact that he is not an obvious choice. Standing approximately 6 feet 2 inches tall, with the appearance of a classic leading man and experience across action, drama, and romance, he possesses qualities that could work in a new interpretation of the character.
But it would be a mistake to assume that the next Bond must simply reproduce the model established by Daniel Craig. Between Casino Royale and No Time to Die, Craig transformed the secret agent into a physically brutal, emotionally vulnerable man increasingly haunted by the consequences of his own decisions.
Turner could offer a different combination: a more understated elegance, a subtler sense of humor, and a masculinity capable of shifting between confidence and vulnerability. His performance in Masters of the Air suggests that he has the ability to portray someone maintaining an appearance of control even as everything around him begins to collapse.
The great unknown, naturally, is Denis Villeneuve’s vision. The filmmaker behind Arrival, Blade Runner 2049, and Dune is unlikely to have been hired simply to repeat established formulas. With Steven Knight, creator of Peaky Blinders, writing the screenplay, expectations are high for a reinvention that respects James Bond’s identity without ignoring changes in cinema and its audience.
The next film will be the first produced under Amazon MGM’s creative control, following Barbara Broccoli and Michael G. Wilson’s decision to relinquish their stewardship of the franchise. It represents a historic change for a series that spent more than six decades under the creative supervision of the same producing family.

If Callum Turner is indeed selected, he will become the seventh actor to portray James Bond in the official film series, following Sean Connery, George Lazenby, Roger Moore, Timothy Dalton, Pierce Brosnan, and Daniel Craig.
For now, no official announcement has been made. But Turner is no longer just another name on a long list of candidates. He has become one of the central figures in the race. At 36, with a rising career and enough experience to carry a major production, he may be approaching the role that will permanently transform his trajectory.
And if Dua Lipa ends up performing the next Bond theme song, the new 007 could make his debut with a privilege none of his predecessors enjoyed: a soundtrack practically in the family.
